Does anybody have any tips for exercising the upper body for more distance. I'm a female and have been working out regularly for 2 months. I use the machine weights at my complex. And casual will use rubber bands at home.
Dixie Belle, To get more distance you not only want strength, but you have to develope type II fast twitch muscles in you forearms, arms and shoulders. The best thing for that is to use a swing fan. The faster you swing it the more resistance it has. Swing 4 times as fast as you can, rest 30 seconds, and do 4 sets. Swinging a heavy club slowly will help to build strength.
I am probably not the best person to answer, as I can only hit 200 yards!, but for power make sure the weights you are lifting are heavy enough that you can only complete 8-12 reps per set.
The golf swing uses so many different muscles, that it is best for your routine to include the whole body (including legs, back and abs).
777, I don't think so, The swing fan and the heavy club might even help your mechanics because swinging faster happens when your mechanics are good, the heavy club will make you release better and on time if you don't fight it. ON the range to learn to swing faster, you can take a 1/2 back swing and try to hit full distance on the downswing and follow through. Personally, with my new clubs, swing, and this type of training, my club head speed has gone up from 80 mph to 95 mph with my driver. I have picked up 25 yards with my irons. I still don't hit it as far as when I was younger but this is the best I have done in years since I had surgery on both hands and had lost 40 yards of distance.
I would focus quite a bit on your TORSO strength, to ensure your middle body is strong. Do plenty of side bends (with dumbells), exercises on the exer-ball, and plenty of abdominal and lower back exercises. This will stabilize you.
And for more power/distance - YOGA. I've just taken up yoga, and it really helps my flexibility, and my ability to rotate my torso. And for whatever reason - I'm much more aware of my arm positions, stance, and overall body positioning.
Distance comes from impacting the ball with the fastest clubhead speed possible. This is achieved by the "whip" of your torso/arms/wrists/club/clubhead combination unwinding in that sequence. Make sure to maintain a lag (wrists cocked) as far down as possible on your downswing, effectively "whipping" the clubhead past the ball. this will give you distance!
