Feeling your clubhead on plane

I've experimented with different clubs, and personally, I have found that with the MP14's the clubhead is heavier. I feel during my backswing, if I relax, I am more conscious of where my clubhead is, and where it is in relation to the proper swing plane.

Do others feel this? In other words, can you "feel" where your clubhead is on plane? Is this what they mean when they say "let the clubhead do the work?"

This has also led me to a second question in regards to equipment - is it more advantageous to have ligheter shafts (e.g., Nippon 850's [85 gms])?

From what I understand the club should feel weightless if swung on the proper plane. If the club head feels heavy doesn't that mean the club is dropping below the proper swing plane? I personally prefer heavier clubs because it gives me a better feel for my wrist fully setting at the top of the swing. I've been playing with a set of Ping Zings which feel much lighter than my 690.cb forged 7 iron I use to practice at home. The feel of the wrist setting is emphasized with the heavier club.

I think for those with slower swing speeds (ex: seniors/women/juniors) lighter shafts help increase swing speeds. A lighter object in general is easier to swing. I believe graphite shafts were introduced for this very reason. Various companies now offer steel shafts that are just as light if not lighter than graphite shafts.

my 2 cents =)

Hello,

You are a feel player, so yes It is important to feel the clubhead. It would be great if everyone could feel this weight it would help everyone do better.

Not every one learns by feel, you are blessed.

There are books like the Golf Machine that was written years ago and it explanes the geometry/physics of the swing but in a way that is way out, and in this book it talks about load and how the club weights more at the top of the back swing, but this kind of knowledge can get in the way of the natural instincts needed for learning sports like golf.

So stay with your great ability to feel the clubhead and you will be just fine.

Feel is tough because you get used to it and then people try to feel it again and end up over doing the "feel". I believe that swing plane is a result of your body working correctly not something that you manufacture.

I've noticed feel issues with my iron grips. I've regriped from the soft Winn grips to hard Lamkin Crossline Classic Cords. The Winn grips don't give me a good indication of where the clubhead is during my swing. With the cords, my irons feels heavier to me and I'm more precise and incontrol of my swing and shot.
