I just got done watching "playing lessons from the pros" on the golf channel starring Justin Leonard and something significant caught my attention.
He says when hitting your lob wedge around the green out of the rough, u hit behind the ball almsot like a bunker shot. He says you want to catch the thick grass first and have it between the clubface and the ball, to make the ball fly high and die, with little spin. Maybe most of you knew about this shot, but I for one always thought u want to hit the ball first and than the earth second. Except of course when your in the sand... I just thought this was cool and I really cant wait to try it. Now I see why I thin my lob wedge all the time :( It will be cool to see if this works for me.
The flop shot is nothing more than a bunker shot played from the grass. If more people would envision it this way, they wouldn't skull this shot.
I agree with JC. THis is how I play the flop shot and I can pull it off fairly easily. Exact distance control is the only problem I have with it. I tend to play it with a SW though. It tends to slide through the grass better for me and not get caught up or slide completely underneath
The best way to gauge your distance with the lob wedge or any other short shot is to develop 4 "stock" shots with any club (one of the things I agree with Pelz about). Develop your 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 and full shots with each wedge and then you will know how far back to take the club for any given distance/situation.

I do that on normal shots, and I will start doing that on flop as well, same with sand too I amagine?
out of the sand I have not tried it enough yet to inform you. on other shots here is a link to a thread I started about it http://golfrewind.com/showthread.php?t=7349
seems like some people are quick to say that it wont work for them. I say five it a shot for a while and see how it goes. Seems like JC endorses this method, he is a teaching pro
