50 yards or less and around the green I usually play with the ball back in my stance. If I'm in the fairway around 40-50 yards and I want the ball to hit and check up, I'll play the ball back in my stance, and keep your hands ahead of the clubface. What I mean, is at setup if you're right handed, place the ball just inside your back (right) foot and the top of the shaft pointing towards your left hip. Think of this shot as pinching the ball between the clubface and the ground, this "squirts" the ball out low with a good amount of backspin. I also use this same position if I'm playing into a strong wind or a punch shot.
If you're talking about a flop shot, the ball goes back in your stance again (just inside your back foot). This shot requires your lower body to remain calm very similar to a shot out of the sand. this is a shot that requires some wrist action. Your objective is to come down on the ball at a steep angle and slide the clubface under the ball to pop it up and land soft. Your lower body remains quiet, it should be mostly feel and a slow rhythmic swing with your upper body.
If I have a lie in the rough, again I place the ball back in my stance so I have a better chance of getting the clubface on the ball since it will be a steep downswing on the ball.
A couple things to remember, if you want the ball to come out with a high trajectory, place the ball forward in your stance. For a low trajectory, place the ball back in your stance.
Playing the ball in different positions in your stance depends on what you want the ball to do. With me, if I want the ball to hit the green or short of the green and release, I play the ball forward in my stance or closer to the middle. If I want the ball to check up when it hits the green, I play the ball back in my stance and keep my hands ahead of the clubface.
Short shots require practice, practice, and more practice. It is very difficult to get used to distances when you start talking 1/2 & 3/4 shots with a wedge. I hope this helps and good luck.
