Talking correct ball position for short shots

when making short approch shots(50 yards or less) or even chips or pitches where is the ball supposed to be placed in your set-up? I know a flop shot the ball is in front of you or on your lead foot...but on normal pitch and short approach shots where should the ball be? and does it depend on the lie you have? I have been playing most short shots on my front foot and with most of my weight on my front foot...is this incorrect?? i think it may be?!? I hope you guys/gals understand the main drift of this post and any and all help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Copper

It depends on the ball flight you are looking for. If you want to hit the low spinner, place the ball behind the middle of your stance and hit down and through the ball. It will come out a little lower but spinning tremendously giving you a couple bounces and stop action.

50 yards or less and around the green I usually play with the ball back in my stance. If I'm in the fairway around 40-50 yards and I want the ball to hit and check up, I'll play the ball back in my stance, and keep your hands ahead of the clubface. What I mean, is at setup if you're right handed, place the ball just inside your back (right) foot and the top of the shaft pointing towards your left hip. Think of this shot as pinching the ball between the clubface and the ground, this "squirts" the ball out low with a good amount of backspin. I also use this same position if I'm playing into a strong wind or a punch shot.

If you're talking about a flop shot, the ball goes back in your stance again (just inside your back foot). This shot requires your lower body to remain calm very similar to a shot out of the sand. this is a shot that requires some wrist action. Your objective is to come down on the ball at a steep angle and slide the clubface under the ball to pop it up and land soft. Your lower body remains quiet, it should be mostly feel and a slow rhythmic swing with your upper body.

If I have a lie in the rough, again I place the ball back in my stance so I have a better chance of getting the clubface on the ball since it will be a steep downswing on the ball.

A couple things to remember, if you want the ball to come out with a high trajectory, place the ball forward in your stance. For a low trajectory, place the ball back in your stance.

Playing the ball in different positions in your stance depends on what you want the ball to do. With me, if I want the ball to hit the green or short of the green and release, I play the ball forward in my stance or closer to the middle. If I want the ball to check up when it hits the green, I play the ball back in my stance and keep my hands ahead of the clubface.

Short shots require practice, practice, and more practice. It is very difficult to get used to distances when you start talking 1/2 & 3/4 shots with a wedge. I hope this helps and good luck.

the ball position in a 40 - 50 yard shots mainly changes the trajectory of the shot. with the ball closer to your back foot the ball will stay low in comparison to a pitch with the ball at the front of your stance.

It's really a personal thing though some people have diffrent ways of making the ball do the same thing so go to the range and experiment. Do what feels and works best for you.

For a right handed golfer you can think of:

1. Ball closer to Right foot makes the ball roll (R=R)
2. Ball closer to left foot make the ball lifts (L=L)

For all shotes this is the same and you can add:

1. Ball closer to Right foot goes Right (R=R)
2. Ball closer to Left foot goes Left (L=L)
