Wedge help!

I have been having doubts about my wedges. I know it might be because I am sitting here stuck indoors while it is -30 outside, but I would appreciate any input.

I will give some background first. I hit my irons VERY high, always have, get good enough distance that this doesn't worry me. I do however, have a huge gap between my PW and SW. My PW is 45 degrees, and I hit it 125yrds consistently, more or less if needed. My SW 56 degrees, I hit about 75 yards, I am very good from 50 and in with the SW. My 60 degree I RARELY use, because I tend to swing under the ball and it pops up and goes about 10 feet.

I was just wondering if I would be better suited to go to a 45 PW, 50 GW, 55 SW set up. I have been practicing 3/4 1/2 shots with my PW in the meantime and I am getting used to it, but I just wonder if I could be better of with a club in between there.

Anyone else with this problem? Would you switch to a GW SW instead of a SW LW?

Thanks for any help.

10* is too much of a gap between you pw and your sw. Drop the lob and pick up a gap that is the closest you can get between the two.

I'd personally go pitching wedge 52* and 58*. Or, you could just choke down on your pitching wedge to make it go the same distance as a gap wedge, same difference.

I used to just have a PW and a SW....but just recently got a GW and find it great! especially for chips and sometimes out of bunkers.
I'd recommend getting one.

I love my 52º, it's a great club for not only approaches but very useful around the greens as GG just mentioned. Fills the gap nicely.

wow thanks for all the reponses... for those of you that you that use a 52 and a 56 do you carry a lob wedge as well??

I am looking at replacing my wedges with the Cleveland 588 or the 900's any input or suggestion? I play Wilson Fat shafts (cavity backs), about a 15-18 handicap.

For whatever reason, I don't find use for a GW. The ONLY time I find use for it is when I need a full shot distance between my PW and SW - otherwise, it sits in the bag very lonely. In the odd situation where I need that yardage, I just hit a 3/4" PW to get the shot I need.

Everybody's different, but I carry a 47* PW, 56* SW, and 60* LW, just seems to work for me.

It sounds to me like your underlying problem with your wedges is ball position. Getting the distance you do out of your PW and then having such a dramatic decrease to your SW gives clues but the kicker for me without seeing it is your tendency to pop up your LW. This tells me that your hands are NOT leading the clubface at impact (hands in front of the ball make it impossible to slide the club under the ball enough to pop it up 10 feet on a full swing). If you simply adjust your ball position for the SW/LW and make sure you lead the clubface with your hands, I think you will see a better increase in distance.

To answer the other question, I prefer my GW to a LW unless I am playing a course with a lot of elevated greens requiring high, short pitches when missing the green. Even then, I hit most of those shots with my SW. The other place that the LW is great for is if you are having to chip onto TOUR style greens (hard and fast).

I carry 4 wedges, PW about 48, GW 52, SW 57 and LW 60. I use the LW all the time, it is my go-to club when I miss the green (which is most of the time). Where I play I am either playing over a hazard, or DOWN to a sunken green, and I find it easier to stop the ball using more loft.

The GW I am using less and less - I am getting more joy and purer strikes by hitting 3/4 PW shots. In fact I am contemplating dropping the GW and SW, getting an in-between SW or about 54 degrees, and giving myself more options for longer shots, say, a 5W or a utility.

i have 4 wedges, my mizuno 46 deg pw,reg shaft for 110 to 125yds
and a cleveland 47 deg pw, stiff shaft for 110 to 95yd, then a cleveland 53deg, gap wedge stiff shaft for 95 to 85 yds, then my cleve. 56 deg. sw stiff shaft for 85 and less. but i usually chip with the 53 deg around the greens, depending on the situation.

btw, i've tried a lob wedge and worked fine when practicing, but when in competition, it failed me more often than not. jc is correct, the hands really need to be ahead of the ball and that's not easy for me.

I tend to carry 4 wedges: pw, 52, 56 and 64. What I do is take my 3 iron out of my bag since I have a TM Mid Rescue 3. I noticed you have a utility also, get a 52* wedge and drop your 3 iron.

all of you with your 4 wedges i have a pw and a sw thats all that you need i hit my pw full 140 yds and my 56* full is 130 get good with one wedge! I take out my 56* if im inside a 130 yd shot unless im on the green. one inch off the green ill have my 56* in my hand. its the best club in my bag regardless if all the groves are worn out if you trust it hit it.
