My son has just recently taken up the game. I'm looking to buy him a decient driver. I'm sure that he will need a club with some loft 10-11 degrees but can someone help me with which ones are better for the beginner golfer?
Anything that isn't going to cost you 400 dollars. Honestly I would go to Wal Mart and get him one to let him try that out. Someone just begining doesn't really need something like a Taylor Made R7 or something that will probably just be scratched and beat up by bad swings
Ditto what has been said. The cost of the equipment does not matter at this time. Working on the fundamentals is the most important. Tell him that if he improves with a beginner set, you will buy him a better one if he likes the game and improves. Your best bet might be to locate a certified clubmaker andhave him build one for your son. These are usually not that expensive and will do the job just fine. Depending on how old he is, the stigma with a Target or Wal-Mart set might not settle too well with him, even though what they sell will do the job. This is not a bad driver for him and will perform well and it's only $99.
Also, check alot of the online golf stores, they have many cluns discounted or discontinued. Good clubs for about the same. Here are some places for you to check.
I would take him to a store and let him demo as many as he can, letting him choose which one feels right and yet wont break the bank, look at used clubs as well
TGW.com and Dick's Sporting Goods had a special deal on a 100 dollar NIKE driver. Seems like a pretty good deal. The best bang for the buck IMO, is the 200 dollar Cleveland 400 driver, but that might be a little steep for a brand new player.
I used a Ram 420 when I was on vacation (all they had) and it was a good club for around $40 brand new! Great for a beginner. If you want brand name (and a decent resale club), I would try to find a Taylor Made Burner 420....the head is fairly large (approx 400cc - i think) and you can pick them up for a good price since they are 2 or 3 years old. It would be a great club that he could use for a few years. Or you could spend a little more and get the 580 (original) which also is larger (more forgiving) and decently priced.
I was in luck, I went by our local Pro Golf just to look and find out some info. I told the guy about my son and what I was looking for and what I wanted to spend. He sold me a Ping TiST 10* driver for a sweet price. I took my son to the driving range and he loved it. I was amazed at how much better his driving was by just buying a decient driver. I really think it was all mental because the Ping has such a bigger head/sweet spot than his other driver. But hey what do I know?
Depending on your sons age---- Check out the Killer Bee junior series from Golf Smith. They have a driver set at 15 Deg. So the ball will fly - its great for beginners. Match it up with an L or S flex shaft and he'll have fun. Don't forget to get a ladies grip for his smaller hands.
