Playing in mud

Just got back from 9. Hailstones, driveing rain.

Very very mud. I spanked a tee shot 200 yards only to find the ball in mud. at one point I was chipping with whilst sliding down !

I hit 58 ! Is it normal to have problems in muddy conditions ?

I tended t struggle to get the ball airbourne in the mud...

Any tips help ? I know I tensed when it started to go wrong but even with a good swing I struggled in the mud.

Do you not tee it up in mud? I think its alot harder to nip the ball off the surface as you catch the surface it just kinda melts away beneath your club, I also find it quite hard but if theres any standing water around, Its a free drop.

Usually if it's really muddy, the course will close...but local customs may vary, lol. But generally speaking you want to widen your stance just a little for more balance and stability, and don't swing as hard as you normally would...the whole idea is to remain stable throughout the swing. Also, in the mud there is very little forgiveness through the hitting area...you must catch the ball first. If you normally have a shallow approach and tend to lift the ball with little divot then you might not have much fun in the mud. You must pinch the ball with a steeper arc and hit down and through...very messy and destructive affair which is why many courses don't allow play under such conditions. But if you have a slicker and extra towels, and they let you play then, bless you, laddie, play on. Just don't try to lift the ball (except to clean it, lol)...hit down and through and let the club do the work.

p.s. accelleration is even more important than normal when you're in mud...never, ever decellerate, but especially in the mud. We don't have a lot of mud out here but somehow I manage to find it. :nodsmiley

Its a muni course and it should close, drainage is awful. Greens poor. Will probably not play so much on that course again.

It was really muddy.

I do useually take no or small divots. Even so in places it was boggey like a marsh.

It somehow seems wrong to hit a perfect drive with my 3 wood 200 yards straight down the middle only to be stood with me feet sinking into the mud 1 1/2 inch !

I know what you're talking about with hitting a beautiful drive and it hits straight in the ground with absolutely no roll. Drives me mad..

simonk,
Play mud shots a lot like a fairway bunker shot. Quiet the lower body, using the upper body to generate the majority of your power. Effectively you will have to compensate for the loss of distance due to the lack of leg drive. Usually you will see about a club to a club 1/2 difference. Pick Clean, Stay Clean. Play Well!!

we play lift, clean & place all winter. it's obscenly muddy out here, and they can't pay me enough to wedge it outta 2 inches of the stuff. kinda hate hitting driver this time of year 'cause it's a 10.5* and when the ball comes down SPLAT! takes 5 min just trying to find the crater. lost 2 balls in the fairway on sunday in the mud.

sunday was actually the first day i wasn't moving my ball around. unless it was buried, i was playing it as was. i was starting to develop some bad habits with the people that i play with. gotta get in shape for spring & summer when all the b.s. rules go away. i managed to hit a pw out of a divot surrounded by 2 inches of grass onto the fringe. that was tough for me. there was so much grass behind the ball that when i took the club back i could feel it hit the grass and come off line. took some nice divots, so i'm getting better at staying down. hit one godawful ugly fat hybrid shot though. nice divot, 50yds.

Its very frustrating, I hit abeutiful 3 wood off the tee, went further than either of my playing partners had EVER hit on that hole......right down the middle....

Get to the ball, from 10 yards away looked like a good lie, oh no deep mud, standng still over the ball my feet sink and inch into the mud....

I made what felt like a good swing with 5i SPLAT mud everywhere, I'm sure I mad good contact ball first, mud everywhere ball travels 10yards.........
