Angry Hooking Irons but driver straight

Hey guys,

Im a 21 handicapper and all that is holding me back from 8-9 is my iron shots. They are hooking and pulling but my driver is going dead straight whereas it used to be irons straight and driver fade. Anybody got any tips for me

Thanks

first thing to look at is the easy fix, equipment! Are all your grips the same size? If you iron grips are smaller then they will release earlier, causing the hook. What about shaft flexes, if the irons are more flexible then this will allow the clubhead to shut before impact, causing a hook. Also, what about the lie angle of the club? thsi has an effect too, if you are catching ground more towards the heal then the club will shut as well. the same swing, with different club set ups, will produce a variety of shots. I believe the most important aspect of golf is equipment because if it is not right then you are behind the 8 ball and costing yourself strokes before you even step to the tee box. take a string and wrap it around your grips, then mark the string, and measure. do this on all your clubs and then measure to see if they are the EXACT same size.

Is your driver shaft stiffer than your iron shafts? Stiffer shafts will tend to work the ball right...

I have been hitting my driver straight also with some terribly erratic iron play just as you are doing. This started about a month ago when I began experimenting with ball position at address on the advice of nearly everyone.

Since then I have gone back to playing the ball underneath my left arm pit with all clubs and moving my right foot closer to left as the club lengths shorten, rather than move my ball back in my stance. As I said my driver and fairway woods never became a problem as the ball position was always under my left arm pit but the irons suffered as I move the ball instead of my right leg in.

My ball flight now starts out slightly left, about parallel with my body, and fades back in to center toward the end of ball flight. My left knee seems to be very important in my swing also. I try to key on keeping it pointed toward my target line as my only swing cue and let the back swing take care of itself.

These things seem to work for me but keep in mind I am still very much a rookie. Could spell doom for you

try weakening your left hand grip a bit. go to the range & fiddle around with it. i was there today and learned a few things about club lengths & the relation to the grip. hope it helps. if not, disregard.

It sounds like all the things that you did to correct the driver from fading worked and now you are overdoing those things with the irons. So to correct this in a natural way:

Go to the range (with irons only) - work on lining up straight and stroking a few shots out to the right of the target on purpose and then a few straight, and then a few left untill you can do this at will.

This drill will help you find a swing plane through impact that is parallel to your foot line.

Good stuff glfdiva, also make sure that you are not playing the ball too far forward with the irons.
