Hey guys..i need help...i went to the range a few days ago and i was hitting my drives and my 3 wood great...pretty consistent...however...i could NOT hit my irons at all! my 5, 6, 7 were all going the same distances and i was getting so frustrated...my biggest problem is that i pick huge divots...i tend to get a lot of the ground before the ball and im losing major distance...i hit my 6 iron around 155-160ish...my 7 is pretty much my 150 club...but anyone know of anything that could help me stop picking such huge divots??
I don't know of any specific drills, but I'd say if you teed the ball up a little and hit the same irons you would be getting that sweeping feeling that you're needing. You must have a really steep swing. but like I said, if you tee a few up and swing like that without taking a divot, then try a few without a tee and just swing with the same swing.
i guess i do come down pretty steep...i have a tendency to have that sweeping slice...its just frustrating cuz too often the other result is just a harsh topping of the ball...btw i like ur set...looks almost like mine =)
It sounds like you're trying to scoop the ball instead of hitting down on it. You might be subconsciously thinking that you need to hit the ball on the way up which may be why you're hitting the ground early. As many often point out, you need to strike down on the ball in order to get it airborne.
Yeah it sounds like you're trying to scoop the ball. Try dropping the club more so that you'll hit down on the ball. When you're coming down from your backswing, just drop your hands down and flip your wrists after you make contact with the ball. You'll hit the ball much higher and straighter this way I've found.

Where ever your weight is your club will bottom out. That is - you need to work on getting your weight onto the front foot just before impact and think of swinging through where the ball lies toward the target.
