anyone use the square putting stroke? meaning the clubface is square throughout the whole stroke. Dave pelz says this is the best way and I have begun experimenting with it and seems fairly good. Also any tips on it and do you know of any pros who use it?
I have used this putting stroke for a while now. I find it gives me a bit of trouble in the longer putts, but inside 8 feet it has worked WONDERS!!! I find it is a better stroke for a mallet style putter though, when I try it with a blade it just seems off.
Can't help you on which pros use it, I would be interested in finding out as well!
I've been taught by my coach to have a chalk line on the ground and practice swinging straight along that.. with a square clubface.... I don't like it much.... but it kinda works i guess.
For longer putts just follow through more and it will surprise you on how far the ball will travel.
It's not the distance that's my problem with mallets on long putts.....it's accuracy. For me, a longer putting stroke results in an open and closed stroke similar to a short chip. That's why I'm a blade man.
I try to go straight back and through but on anything more than 30 feet I don't pay as much attention to my form, as I'm concentrating more on distance control & if the hole gets in the way great.
Anything outside of 25 foot im happy to 2 putt, But always expect to make a few longish putts per round. Once I get to the stage where 3 putting is v rare, Then ill expect to make more putts, Untill then - Everytime I 3 putt im giving £1 to charity, That'll get my putting in shape huh

This is the only way I feel comfortable puttin.. It works for me ,and putting is the strongest part of my game.. I guess I am just used to it.. I also use the Boomerang putting aid which helped my stroke and distance control. Anybody else use this aid?
I've read Pelz's book and my teacher sees otherwise. After it all, I'd say that a straight-back straight-through putt is not natural. When you put, you stand to the side of the ball, therefore to keep the face square throughout the stroke it must follow a curve.
Whatever works the best for you, the square stroke doesn't seem like it can be repeated as successfully as inside to inside as shown its tour usage.
I play a mallet and I also find that my long putting stroke does open and close... it has to at least a little as it goes around your body, or else you end up having to forcebly close it in your backswing, and then open it a little at impact and then open it more for your follow through, which is one of the most horrible feeling strokes I can make...
