i used to have a firm grip and had a tendency to have too much tension in my arms resulting in a hard pull occasionally. last few years i keep my grip pretty loose and the result have been pretty dramatic. I think we don't put enough emphasis on the proper grip. agree?

Good for you!!!!!!!!!!!!
When you have the correct lack of tension your clubhead speed will be greater causing a longer shot. Also your body can feel the clubhead better making it easier to square it up at impact.
I have a looser grip but I sometimes tend to grip a little tight. Everyone alwase yells at me though becase I grip my putter tight, and I mean TIGHT. I actually think it helps me because it gives me more control over the putter but when people hear this there like, yeah but your still crazy...
And back on topic I think your right, we dont put enough empasis on grip when many times thats what it comes down to.
I think I probably have a stronger than normal grip but i have been working a lighter Putter grip lately to try to get better feel and judge of distance. it seems to be helping, at least i think it is
Take your normal grip and then raise the club straight out in front of you and have someone pull on the clubhead. If they cannot almost pull the club from you then you have to tight of grip.

I agree with that too,
The pro I go to has only shown me the proper grip once.... ....and that was after we had fixed most of the things in my swing so it just mucked my swing up having to change my grip!
I used to change my grip alot... like one week it would be weak then the other week it would get strong.
Now It's pretty normal and I haven't had a problem with it in months.
I remember I used to have a real strong grip and alwase hit a stong draw that often turned into a hook. I was alwase like "OMG what the !!!"
I finally got up some money and went and got some lessons. All he did was change my grip to a weak grip and just like that all my hook problems were gone.
Why does everyone say a tight grip is bad for putting though? I have a tight putting grip yet my putting average is about 1.7 or 30 per 18. I guess Im just weird

On any other golf shot a tight grip restricts your swing and leads to all sorts of problems, but with putting ... hey whatever gets it in the hole. If it works for you, stick with it.
Let's be careful here. "Strong" and "weak" grips have nothing to do with grip pressure, which is the subject of this thread, not the position of the hands on the grip. We don't want to confuse anyone new to the game, do we?
The terms being used should be "light" and "tight" for grip pressure.

I have a pretty firm grip on the club, but I really focus on keeping my elbows relaxed. It's the tension in the wrists and forearms which can kill the swing. Granted, if you're putting a death grip on the club you'll be tensing up the wrist joint, but I thought it important to mention the small difference.
Tight grip, but I'm loosening it come this season. I'm thinking I'll wear a ring on my right ring finger, just so that if I grip too tightly, I'll really feel it (I've got the interlocking fingers grip) in my left index. So I'll be forced to relax if I'm going to be comfortable and able to swing. It's worked so far in the simulators when I've been demo'ing clubs.
One way I have found to relieve tension is to get a sensation that my right pointer finger and thumb leave the club, (SLIGHTLY) in the impact zone. Since the left hand is the control hand then this will not effect accuracy, it actually improves mine doing this. This keeps tension out of my hands and that makes it easier for me to keep tension out of my arms. THe only thing I want tense is my rear leg when I turn into it.
