Fatigue -> shanks?

This has happened to me many times on the range:

I get a big ol' bucket, & start hitting great. I'm hitting everything long & straight. People around me are noticing...(actually, that's probably just my imagination LOL)

Then, after about an hour, I start shanking every shot & no matter what I do (move away from the ball, keep head still, etc..) I still shank it! I figured that my swing just broke down due to fatigue & my session was over.. PERIOD. But I wonder... I'll bet good players don't have that happen on the range - or if they do- they can fix it.

What do you guys think? Is it fatigue or is it just a bad swing finally revealing its errors?

A severely outside to in swing causes a shank. That type of swing puts the hosel of the club closer to the ball at impact.

This happens to me as well. Sometimes when I am on the course as well. Then my round goes to the toilet.

It could be many factors involved. Back off! Quit your practice or take a break (light up a cigar or get a soda). You might be experiencing fatigue, lack of concentration or both.

I have achieved the same result with a lazy inside to out swing in which I leave the face wide open at impact, applying a glancing blow that slices sharply off to the right in a shank-like trajectory. Then I have to check that I'm not getting my arms too far away from my body in the classic shank off the hosel and that I'm not forgetting to square up the clubface at impact.

Happens with me quite alot, I think its cause im constantly hitting, My swing also seems to get faster at the range, And when I come away my back and arms really hurt as we have no grass to hit off at our ranges and im always hitting down into the mat. Ouch?.

It's tough to say unless we know your range routine. Do you just bang balls out there or do you practice your set-up each shot, repeating a routine. If you use your routine everytime and start to shank- (after how many balls?) I would consider fatigue

Take all your change and put it in your left hand pocket... Alright now tie your left show in a double knot... Turn your hat around backwards...Take a tee and stick it behind your left ear... Okay now take that little ball and hit it straight up the fairway, you'll be ready.

I just don't understand what the problem is.

3 : a part of an object by which it can be attached: as a (1) : a projection on the back of a solid button (2) : a short stem of thread that holds a sewn button away from the cloth b : the end (as of a drill bit) that is gripped in a chuck

but in answer to the thread's question, fatigue is only 1 probable cause but it sure is a mystery. just don't dwell on it.

valeogut - that is what causes my occasional bouts with the ******. My swing gets too flat and inside-out. When it happens I have to concentrate on getting the swing more upright.

The ****** are the work of the devil though!!

if you have the s**** problem, get a video of your swing. I have noticed, including myself, that at set-up, you have your butt out with a straight spine and hands hanging down, but, on the downswing, the butt comes in(it does not stay in the same position) and then the hands move out from the body with less angle than at address, thus the club is farther away from you and the hosel then becomes closer to the ball.

If you watch the pro's in slow-mo, their butt's stay in the same place from set-up until impact and their hands return to the exact position as at address.

This will happen to me on the range if I move all the way up to the Driver, then immediately switch back to a wedge or short iron. Occasionally I'll get a s**** near the end of a round.

I think the reason is allowing my hands to float too far away from my body. If my arms/hands are "out there", I'll come way over the top, and s**** the ball. Ugh.

Yeah, I now believe that I was doing the same thing - arms too far away at address. Not sure why I'm doing that, but it merits more focus and attention next time out.
