I want to learn to play

I have never played golf but have been dying to learn. I have a limited budget and have always been intimidated by the cost factor. Where should I start?
buy used clubs and just start playing?
buy one club and go to the driving range every weekend?
take a lesson with rented clubs?
???

I think you should buy a cheap set see how you like it..... hit balls on the range and go to the course when you are ready, if you really like it get some better clubs FITTED to your specs, and get some teaching advice from a pro

Buy a starter set (Ram has one for about $119). Check out Dick's Sporting Goods website. Take a lesson. It will save you so much frustration.

Best advice I think I could give you is to get you some clubs. Doesn't have to be expensive or anything. You could go to a golf store and get a complete set with bag and all for probably 300 or so of an off name company. Take those and go straight to a teaching pro. If you go out yourself and try to hit the ball you'll be waisting time and money. Invest in a good teacher who can get you started right. Golf is hard enough when you've played it all your life. Its even harder to just buy some clubs and then go out and say "Well I'm gonna play today" It doesn't happen like that. With a good teacher I'd say within 6 months or so you would showing signs of getting the hang of the fundamentals. Once you've got a foundations all that is left is to refine and sharpen skills.

cheap golf

need to keep budget in control as tennis my other hobby is also kinda expensive.. so... bot set of flea market clubs, bunch of old balls.. practise my irons on soccer/baseball field (hey it's real grass and much better than the plastic mat), and woods with wiffle balls in my back yard.

hacked like this for 6 months and now I constantly shoot in the high 80s.
