Booking a golf vacation (maybe Maui), anyone with experience?

So my fiancee actually wants to do a warm-weather golfing honeymoon when we get married in August, and we're thinking about Maui... Anyone know of reputable purveyors of such packages or have suggestions on hotels/courses?

I don't know about golf packages, but my wife and I honeymooned at Kapalua in the summer of 2004. We stayed at the Kapalua Bay Resort. You will pay reduced greens fees if you are staying at Kapalua. You can also get a package deal that includes 1 round at each of the 3 courses. Saves you a few bucks.
We got hung up playing The Plantation Course a few times and looking back, if I do it again, I will play the other 2 Kapalua courses.

Gonna be going to Kaui for 2 weeks in a year and plan on playing Poipu Bay. I think my father and myself are planning on going to Maui for a few days to play some courses. The Plantation course is def. on the list along with Wailea Gold and Emerald courses. Best thing for golf packages is to either look at some of the companies advertising in golf publications or to talk to a travel agent.

Thanks for the tip! I looked into it, but Kapalua Bay Hotel was demolished, but you can rent villas as well... Just might work out!

I was going to say that but I wasn't sure. But I read that too a while back. It's too bad because that place was like a dream. Oh well. Looks like you'll have to stay at the Ritz instead!

And again, I recommend playing each of the 3 Kapalua courses. Even though The Plantation Course is the most known, the other two are also incredible tracks!

Poipu is great. We stayed at the Hyatt Poipu which was totally insane. Spectacular place. The course is a lot of fun too. I played it twice. I also went to the other side of the island and played Princeville. I have mixed feelings about that course. You aren't missing anything if you have to skip Princeville.

I'm a travel agent and the Kapalua Villa are what you would book, right off the Kapalua Bay Golf Course. Nice condos with either golf, mountain or oceanview 1,2,& 3 bedroom villas.

Take a ferry over to Lanai (about $26 one-way) and golf the Lodge at Koele and the Manele Bay Hotel. Both resorts ranked number 1 and number 2, respectively, on Conde Nast Traveler's list of "Top 100 Golf Resorts".

I'm a Hawaii Destination Specialist and I'm study to become a Golf Specialist. Any other questions about Hawaii golf, I'd be glad to answer. Any golf in Hawaii I think would be the most ultimate golfer's experience. The most beautiful courses in the world.

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding! If you're fiance's not a golfer, make sure she checks out the spa treatments while you're on the course

I've been to Maui many times and golfed most of those times. I've played the Kapalua Bay course which has several memorable holes. From what I could tell any of the Kapalua courses would be a treat to play a round on but I would probably shoot for the Plantation course with the Bay course coming in second. I've also played both Kaanapali courses and they are fun courses but don't quite stack up to most of the other courses on the island IMO - although they were redoing the South Course last time I was there so it may be worth checking out. In any case, if you stay in Kaanapali they are still worth a round if you don't have time to get to one of the other courses. I've never played any of the south (Wilea or Makena) courses but some of my friends have and said they were all great. One other course to check out if the prices at the other courses start hurting your pocket book too much is The Dunes which is between Kihei and Kahului. It's not on the ocean but when I was there it was very well maintained and looked like a fun course plus it is quite a bit cheaper than the resort courses. One (or both) of the Lanai courses are still in my sights for our next trip over there and I'm sure neither would dissapoint. Well, I don't know how much help I was on the courses but I guess the point is that just about any course on the West side should be fun.

As far as hotels, it really depends on what you want. Condo or hotel? In busy Kaanapalii or (slightly) more intimate Kapalua or Wailea? Luxury or economy? We always stay at the Westin in Kaanapalii since it is close to all sorts of activities, has a great beach and pool setup (we have kids) and is overall a nice hotel. Plus it is between Kapalua and Wailea so you are pretty central to all of the West side golf courses. We have also stayed oceanfront at the Whaler condos which were pretty nice and the Kaanapali Alii are great condos as well. If you want intimate and private though I would stick to Kapalua or Wailea (probably not the Grand Wailea though - maybe the Four Seasons or Kea Lani). Give us a little more info on what you want in a hotel and I am sure someone can point you to the perfect spot.

Maui is a great place to vacation, a better place for a honeymoon (we had ours there) and probably one of the best places in the US to golf. Have fun.

Matt

PS - Twilight tee times are a great deal but just be ready for some heat if you take advantage of it. I would personally pay the extra and get a morning tee time on any course with the possible exception of the Kapalua courses. If you don't mind a bit of wind you can usually play twilight there and the trades will blow and keep you cool in my experience. Just make sure to put on sun screen.

I live on Maui, and those are all good tips. It really all comes down to budget. Kapalua is great, the villas are a good deal, not the highest level accomodation but very good value, particularly with associated discount golf. Kapalua has 2 courses, and it is rumored the Bay course may close some greens for repair some time soon. The Ritz at Kapalua is closing in July for 6 months, that is the A+ accomodation. I personally would rather stay in Wailea, again budget related, or Kaanapali. The 4 seasons is spectacular but pricy, that is the number 1 place. Grand Wailea had my honeymoon, expensive too. I like the Hyatt in Kaanapali a lot for price and beauty. Probably my favorite. The only negative is the discounted golf would only apply to the 2 Kaanapali courses, which I would rate B. Depending on how much golf, I would play 1 round only at Kapalua unless staying there, and try any of 5 other great courses. Makena South, Wailea Emerald, Dunes at Maui Lani. The boat to Lanai is a must for avid golfers, about $300 total with golf. For honeymoon, I would consider splurging and staying at Manele Bay Hotel on Lanai, it's truly a once in a lifetime great place, now a 4 seasons also. Kauai is spectacular also for beauty, golf and honeymoon, and Hyatt Poipu would be my next choice. The Big Island is fantastic also. So many choices, take time planning. If one week, I would only go to 1 island, if 10 days then 2 islands. Also, golf is very expensive at the high end courses without a Hawaiian Driver License, and only real deals are at the few places where get guest rates by staying there.
