I've had these irons for about 90 days now and couldn't be happier! I was an 8 hcdp, now I'm a 6, and I owe a lot to these irons. They are just soooo easy to hit! I used to carry a 6,7,8,9 iron and 3 hybrid woods, now I'm using the Hibores and carry one 18* hybrid wood.
I know a lot of people are thrown off by the wide sole appearance, but the clubs are HOLLOW inside and not at all heavy. If you look at Cleveland's website you will find a very detailed view of them. I was looking at the Adams Idea Hybrids and thought they were great clubs...matter of fact I was almost ready to pick up a set when Cleaveland annouced their Hybrid irons coming out. I attended a Cleveland "Demo-Day" and spent a couple of hours on the range with them. I was able to hit off GRASS so I got a true feel for them. I think if you only get to hit them off a mat the sheer design of the wide soles would probably give you a "bouncing" effect and might turn people off. On the course the sole cuts through the turf like a razor blade! I tend to really come down through the ball and take a pretty good sized divot and these Hibores are really great at that. Even now when I am hitting a 3 iron I still manage a good sized divot...WITHOUT any loss of distance! I didn't buy these irons to hit LONGER...but they are definately longer.
I think the thing that convinced me to get these of the Adams Idea clubs is that from the 3 iron right through the PW it is an almost seemless progression, unlike the Adams that jump from an iron to a hybrid wood look when you get to the longer clubs. Not that that is a bad thing, it's just that the look of the Hibores is almost the same no matter what club you are hitting....matter of fact there are many times I take a second look at the club number once I'm ready to hit! Once again, the Cleveland website will give you a VERY good look at the clubs side by side, 3 thru pw, and you will see what I mean.
I play with a regular group of guys every week. There are 8 of us and we "rotate" through the foursomes weekly so we all get a chance to play with each other. In the last month, THREE of the other guys have bought the HIBORES!!! During our rounds they would try mine and loved them...enough to buy their own.
Now of course I'm not saying they are for everyone, but when 50% of our "group" is now playing them....there must be SOMETHING good about them, eh?
For those of you who are thinking of giving them a try, may I suggest the following:
1. Hit them on GRASS !!! Any make of iron will give you a "bounce" feeling off a mat, but you might find that feeling a bit more pronounced with the wide-soled Hibores. When hitting of grass these babys glide right though and won't "stick" in a divot.
2. Because the clubs are designed with an incredible "low center of gravity" do NOT try to "pick-up" the ball when hitting. If you simply swing "down and thru" the club will do ALL the work for you. The ball will get "up" and go "long" on it's own.
One thing I REALLY love is the sight of my 3 iron arching toward the green...hitting the green...and CHECKING UP within 4 or 5 feet..no more heartaches after hitting a nice shot only to have it "skid" off the back of the green!
Of course there is no "1" brand of club that is for everyone, but I think these Hibore Hybrid Irons at least deserve a "sporting chance" if you are in the market for a new set. Whether you are a 6 or a 26 handicap....these MIGHT be just what you are looking for!
