I am a retired Navy man currently living on an Air Force base in Misawa Japan. My wife is still active so I am now a "dependent"! But, the up side is it leaves loads of time to play a lot of golf in between house work! This is the first season I have been able to play on a regular basis (more that three times a year!) in the last 20 years. I average about 5 rounds a week during the Spring, Summer and early Fall months here in Northern Japan. The local courses are beautiful and well maintained albeit expensive to play. The base course is nice but a little short. The price is right, though. My handicap has dropped from a 29 to an 18 over this summer. Looking forward to learning more about the game from the many experienced (and not so experienced!) golf addicts on these forums!

Green fees run about $100 to $350 here in Japan. In Northern Japan, where I live, it is on the lower end of the scale. There are a couple of country clubs that give American service men and women about a 50% discount. A lot of the country clubs include lunch and an "onsen" (hot bath) with the fees. At these clubs you get a second tee time at the turn.
On base, I pay $50 a month for unlimited play. Best deal going! The base course is open to local Japanese golf club members but they pay about 50% more for green fees. It helps keep the prices down for the military folks plus gives the local community a chance to play at a reasonable rate.
