Well, I joined a while back and have been lurking, but rainy days and later work hours conspired to get me to post a 'hello" message.
I have played golf since I was 10, but always casually and irregularly. I really have taken to the game with fervor in the last 6 months, as I now have the time and (modest) finances to give it the attention it deserves (i'm 38, Licensed Mental Health Therapist ). My low scores now are mid-90's, and a pear-shaped round is 105-ish. Best single round was an 88 on a lower-slope course. I'm glad to be in the deep south, so I'll still have time to shave off some strokes before it gets too cold (though most winters it never gets "too cold" down here ).
I've enjoyed the comments and posts here, especially the overall egalitarian vibe... the one thing that turned me off from golf for so long in my youth was the elitism that seemed to be sewn into the fabric of the game. I'm glad to see the sport moving away from that (for the most part...).
I'm kind of new as well. I live up in the Nashville area, but spent a few years in Macon. I know your part of the world well. St. Simons Island...Yeah, baby!
Hello Jon. I lived in Valdosta for about 6 years. I graduated from VSU. Where do you usually play? I was a member at Stone Creek while I lived there.
Brett
Hi Brett -
I got both a Bachelor's and Master's from VSU ('88 and '95, respectively). 2004 Division II National Champs!!!!
Stone Creek is where I play as well, my twosome-partner/Dad is a member currently (and lives there), and I plan on joining next spring, as my son is 8 and has also been bitten by the Golf bug. Nice course, eh? The "low-slope" course I mentioned earlier was Francis Lake, it's nice also...did you ever play it? I have a Brother-in-law w/ an 8 handicap who is a member there.

When I first moved to the Valdosta area I lived just outside of Lake Park in a little community called Dasher. When I lived there I would play Francis Lake every Saturday.
I haven't played it since the newest owner bought it but I hear it's quality has gone up. I want to get back to Valdosta and play Kinderlou Forest. I hear that's a great course.

It's a beauty, looks to be challenging. I've been to the restaurant there several times (food underwhelming, fwiw), but haven't played yet... very high greens fees.
Springhills semi-private but if you are from outside Tifton you can play for about 38.00.
Also Sunsweet GC here is pretty nice (when they water the course regularly) now That we have had a weeks rain. The course is actually better laid out than Springhill. Cost is about the same around 40.00. These are the only courses around Tifton that I would play. Check out Georgia veterans Golf club it is only about 40 min north of Tifton. Albany has two great places to play as well.
I grew up in Valdosta.Spent 23 years down there before moving to New Jersey. I've played Springhill, but it's been a loooong time ago. They had a Ga. State Amateur qualifier there and myself and a friend played. I shot 78 I believe and missed a playoff for an alternate position by 2 shots I believe. I seem to recall that there was a really long par 3 there, maybe #2 or really close to the starting hole. I've also played the Veterans course as well, soon after it opened. A golf team buddy and myself went up and played it. I recall that Sonny Skinner had the course record at the time. I believe it was a 66 (?) or maybe even a 63 (?). Whatever it was he smoked the course!
I go back to Valdosta abut twice a year to visit my parents and family. I've played Kinderlou maybe 5 times since it opened and it's a really nice course. It's definitely built for tournament play. Absolutely HUGE driving range tee box and putting green. First class clubhouse as well. Can't really comment on the food outside of hotdogs and fries. Anyway, it's good to see some homebodies are here. Simp
