Talking Hello from Japan

Hi, Dave from Northern Japan. Just shot my best round ever Friday afternoon, breaking 100 for the first time, shooting a 97!! 4 pars & 7 bogeys, by far my best round of golf ever!! It REALLY is true that the short game makes all the difference!!

Wherever you play, hit 'em good.

Hi Dave! Congratulations on breaking 100 for the first time! That's probably the benchmark you hear people trying to surpass most often. Exactly where in Japan are you from? I visited Tokyo 5 years ago and also spent a weekend in Kyoto and a few more days in the Numazu area. I enjoyed my stay a lot. Never saw any golf courses, though. How are the courses there? Expensive, I bet. Well, I just wanted to say hi and welcome you to the forums!

Thanks for the welcome & invite... I'm stationed in Northern Japan and play the base course here.. par 71, but the new golf pro in last year has made some phenomenal improvements here, and it is simply awesome... such that, we have tournaments literally every Friday until October!!

The greens fees & membership costs are based on a rank basis, so the higher you are, the more you pay. There have been some drastic improvements in the 9 years I've been here, even the subtle touches he's made have lifted the base's morale.

The Japanese courses are expensive, from $50 to $150, depending on where you go.. For us military types, that's pricey, but WELL worth the cost.. We can sometimes get weekday discounts on deals between the Japanese workers at the course and the course pros throughout the area.

The Japanese are very voracious & border-line obsessed with golf, as you can find a course & driving range dang near everywhere you look.... I'm going to be living here for another 18 months or so, and I am definitely going to be playing the local courses, and when I do, I'll be posting some awesome details.... I've heard of split-level greens, St. Andrews sized too... Really looking forward to playing them.

Wherever you play, hit 'em good.

Welcome mate, I'd love to be paying that much for full membership too.

Golf well,

Nick

Thanks for your service, Dave. Providing our military men and women with a good golf facility is the least we can do. With all of the cost-cutting of our military budgets during the 90's, I'm surprised that any military golf facilities remain, so I'm happy to hear that you are enjoying one.

I'm looking forward to your reports on the courses you play!
