A New Lefty

Hello everyone,
My name is Marvin from Michigan. I have been interested in playing for quite some time, but I started a family and a career that has been very time consuming. I am very competitive, and wish to be good at whatever I attempt. I'm left handed and have been watching the Golf Channel's Golf Academy to help me get better. Does anyone have any tutorial suggestions for a new lefty??? Thanks in advance.

Hi Marvin and welcome to Golf Rewind! It's great to have you here and hope you enjoy the forum! You may want to post your question in the Golf Tips section of the forum, hopefully someone can help you there.

Thanx

Thank you for your reply. I'll post a similar question in that area. Maybe I should've just done an intro of myself to the community. I'm a little new to this thing.

Hi Marvin,
I'm new here. As you probably know golf is a great game your whole family can enjoy. I'm not a teacher but I watch the golf channel daily. I recommend not to think about all that you see\hear while watching THC on the course--- only at the driving range. I would also suggest you read "Golf is not a game of perfect" Bob Rotella. Good luck!!!!

I am a lefty too, started playing about 18 months ago. Great game! It gets very confusing reading golf tips out of magazines and books, and having to convert everything in your head from left to right and right to left - makes it that much tougher to understand what is being said.

I HIGHLY suggest you buy the book 'On the Other Hand', by Steve Anderson. He is out of FL and is the only left handed certified PGA Instructor. This is the 'only' golf instruction book specifically for us lefties. I own it, well worth the $15 off Amazon.com.

This past weekend was the first time that I tried to apply what I had seen and I was constantly thinking about the shows that I had TiVo'd. By the end of the round, I was just trying to hit the ball, and I felt like I was doing alot better. I didn't use my drivers or woods at all. I wanted to keep the ball in play. That was useful for me as I became more familiar with my irons. I am going to pick that book up. Thanks for the tip.

I agree with you about the magazines. I have bought a ton of them, and it's all cluttered in my mind right now. Have you finished reading the book? Did you take lessons? How often do you get a chance to play?

Sorry BigMarv. That's an inside joke that you'll understand once you've been here for awhile.
I am eager to find out about the 'Inside Joke.' I live in Brownstown which is about 30 miles south of Detroit. Where do you call home???

I have finished reading the book, but refer to it often. Matter of fact, I keep it in my bag sometimes so its handy.

I have not taken lessons. I would love to be able to take a lesson a week, but can't afford the $60 an hour to be honest. I have a brother in law that is a 3 handicapper that tries to help me some though, and I have found Leadbetters' 'Beginner to Winner' DVD to be pretty good also. I manage to play probably 3 out of 4 weekends a month I'd say, and go to the driving range once or twice a month just to hit some.

I've been sticking to the par 3's here lately because my wedge play is the worst part of my game. Just horrible. Why pay $30, $40, $50 and up to play on a full course, when I can play a par 3 for $10 and work on my short game the whole time...? I have found what quite a few people told me when I started is true - it's all about the short game.

I read Tiger's book a few times. I use it as a point of reference all of the time, and I also bought a book by Sam Snead several years back. I don't use that one as much. I also bought a book of drills, but I haven't even looked at that one much. I bought at a time when I couldn't golf, but now that it's warm out, I have just been trying to get out and play. I feel like I can improve my game when I play more so than at the driving range. What about you???

A friend of mine suggested that a group of us go on a trip to Traverse City for a weekend of golf. I said sure, but haven't ever been before. Are the courses difficult there? I'm a beginner, and don't want to embarrass myself.

I was wondering if you were a lefty too? How long have you been playing? My driver gives me grief. I say that it has a split personality!!!

No, I'm not a lefty. My husband now says he wishes he had started me out as a lefty. I've only been playing for about 4 years, but I'm still not very good - I've never broken 100. However, I love the game and I love the time spent with my hubby, we have a great time! My driver is not the best for me either, and often I will just use another wood off the tee. Many times, it will go much farther and the end results are better than if I used my driver.
