Driving range rat

Hey, I'v been lurking around here for a while and decided to join in the fun. I don't play much golf because I can't hit the ball. Yes, I know, lessons! Tried that, I'm a terrible student. I try to get to the driving range at least once a week and I'v got a weighted club from Walmart and foam balls that I use in my front yard when I get the time.
So......what would be your favorite book or training aid?

I would try the Swing Setter by Leadbetter. I have seen it work wonders with mid-high handicaps.

Welcome to the board. I am a newbie too, but I guess I can say that.

Jack Nicholas -Golf my way is a wonderful book from the master himself.

Ben Hogan- Five lessons, The Modern Fundamentals of Golf took me back in time. It was a fun read and I learned a lot too!

Dave Pelz-Putting bible and Short Game bible give you all the information you ever wanted to know on these topics.

Those are a good start.

Thanks BB.
Another question; what would be a good starter set for around $250? I can't afford much more than that.

Go to borders or Barnes and Noble and you will always find a huge coffee table style golf everything book for 5 or 10 bucks...it will at least familarize you with the basics of the game as it can be mystifing and intimidating for the beginner without an experienced golfer taking you through the inital paces (avoidance of walking on someone's putting line was an alien concept until I was told, as was the scorecard...so many colored boxes and numbers...speaking of which I never did learn how to keep score in bowling; at least there aren't any more grease pencils and overhead projectors...)

You may have to drop an extra hundred bucks. But I prefer name brand clubs because the quality tends to be better. For example Taylor Made, Mizuno, Ping, Cleveland. I dont want to push Titleist on you, but I have played Titleist for years and have never had an equipment problem. I would suggest any of the above (used). They all come in oversized, cavity back, perimeter weighted, off set if your a slicer. Ask for regular flex clubs if you have a smooth slower swing. You can check ebay and most golf stores have these or others like them used. Try several of them before you buy. Since they are used, most dealer will allow you to test them. I bought my set used and they have served me well.

All the best, Let me know what you wind up getting!

Welcome to Golf Rewind! You may try to buy a used set from someone, or maybe there's a second-hand sporting goods store in your area. You can also check out Custom Golf Sales and Innovex who help sponsor this forum, as they can have some really good deals.

Besides the books the other posters have mentioned, try reading some Harvey Penick material.
