I've played golf off-and-on since I was 13 and am just now taking the game back up seriously at age 25. I'm proud to say, after years of playing hand-me-down, standard spec, off-brand clubs, I just ordered my first set of irons (Adams A2-OS) that are fitted for me -- which is important, considering I'm close to 7' tall.
I spent a lot of time lurking and reading this board to get insight on the process. I'm excited to get back to playing, even if I am getting a late start on things!
Good to see another Ohioan. welcome to the forum. Hope you got warmer weather down in Cincy then I got up here in the Canton Area. Still not keeping me off the course though.
I play standard length drivers for the time being -- until I can afford to get fit for one.
Buying irons has been an unholy ordeal. I just found out today that Adams won't make my clubs to order -- the most they'll extend is 1.5".
So, I'm back to square one looking for a set of clubs that I can afford from a manufacturer that will make to order.
Check with Ping or Henry-Griffiths. I heard the latter was able to fit a guy who was 6'11". They make top quality equipment and they have fitters all over the US (my brother in law is very pleased with his set).
to GR, Caveat! Besides club-fitting issues, do you feel your height helps or hurts your golf?
I think it all really evens out -- I get great distance on most of my shots but I have an annoying tendency to pull up early and top the ball just based on my normal swing. Staying down, especially with my wedges and shorter clubs, has been one of my biggest problems, one which I hope going to more appropriate club-length will fix. I hit the heck out of my low-irons, since they're the longest irons in my bag, so I think that projects well for once my lower irons start out at that length.
As an update, it turns out that the A2 OS series actually runs (depending on the club) between .25" and .75" extended beyond standard length for normal clubs, so the 1.5" will actualy work out well. This is good, because I'm eager to start playing!
