5 year beginner

I think this forum may save me money in therapy.
I'm a struggling golf addict who takes the game way to serious.
I'm 39 and have been golfing for 5 years pretty much on a weekly basis. I have stiil not broke 80 but think this is my year. I live in Portland Oregon and just recently got back from my annual Palm Springs golf marathon of 36 holes X 3 days. Yes that's 108 holes of perfect condition golf .
I usually score in the high 80s to low 90s when I'm down there but this trip was different. Four of my rounds were in the high 90s and two were in the low 90s.M aybe that is just how this game is or maybe I'm getting worse. HELP

First, welcome to Golf Rewind. You can get some generic tips from our members or do some searching in our database for threads you might find helpful, but for us to help you with any specifics we'll have to know more about your game...what do you feel is the hardest part of the game that's holding you back? Tee ball? Approaches? Short game? Mental game? Let us know more.

Re: 5 year beginner

My problem area is between my ears I think. If I start a round with a double it's hard to focus on positive thoughts, but I have pulled through it before.
Golfing in wet Oregon conditions with slow putts and always being able to land a green without fear of the ball rolling off is what I'm used to. Not lightning fast greens and weary approach shots. It's beautiful golf down there in Palm Springs but a 3 day marathon might be the wrong approach. My dissapointing performance will eat at me until I can get out and redeem myself. Hopefully this weekend I will play one of my normal mid 80s rounds and all will be forgotten.

Welcome aboard. If you like to learn from books, try "How To Play Your Best Golf All the Time" by Tommy Armour, Sr. I first read it nearly 60 years ago and still review parts every few months. I also have a 2 handicap at 67 years of age.

Re: 5 year beginner

Thanks for the tip Billyg. I'm very interested in learning from books so I'll be checking out that one for sure.
My Dad is 69 and also has a low handicap so this is very good news.
Some of my friends that I golf with feel that it will be hard to improve until we can retire or maybe until the kids are gone so we can devote more time. What do you think?
