Please Let me introduce myself. I go by the mcsican. I am an avid golfer and golf historian who believes in the purity and beauty of the game. I was lucky enough to be able to attend the Masters this past weekend and will post my thoughts about it. I am also a scratch golfer who loves to sit back and kick back on a few Captain Morgans.
What a magnificence weekendfrom Augusta National. This Masters had to be one for the ages. I arrived at Augusta National at 7 AM sharp and got in about a half hour later. I decided it was best to go to the 10th green at the start and than walk with the players when Dimarco finished. I am sorry if this gets long but I would like to just give my thoughts player by player.
VJ SINGH – VJ looked much disoriented from the start and I think you could see it from his play. He seemed to have a myriad of problems as the day went along. One of those problems was his inability to recuperate after having just one bad shot. As many of you recognize I am a huge VJ fan so this was dishearten and extremely vexing. He seemed to hit an approach shot wide, than follow it up by never being able to get up and down. I do have to hand it to VJ though for his marvelous demeanor throughout the round. I feel like a lot of people just not on this board but in our mundane society feel that one must be always be jumping up and down with an enceinte smile on there face to be loved. I believe VJ cares just as much about winning as does Tiger Woods or any other golfer out there. I also can’t stand when people knock VJ for playing in golf tournaments like the 84 Lumber Classic. If Tiger woods doesn’t feel like participating in a tournament unless he is either paid for it, his sponsor is running it, or it is a very distinguished even that that’s fine with me. No one has to play in any golf tournament, but don’t bash someone who obviously has a love for the game that he is always wanting to compete. I would be the first one to agree VJ might need to look outside the box sometimes and find a hobby or two but if he wants to play in the John Deer Classic than I say more power to him. One last thing about VJ. I feel like he gets this bad rap for just telling Phil to look at his spikes. I am sure a great deal of other players would have taken offense to spike marks being all over the green it just happens VJ was in the group behind Phil. Don’t knock him for doing the right thing.
Ernie Els – Ernie didn’t flourish this week at Augusta and I know the media seems to have the flu excuse (usually used for Tiger) all ready to go for him but I think there was more than that. He didn’t seem to be in excruciating pain at any time in the round. I am the first one to admit I am not the most proficient and skilled golfer nor am I an expert on the golf swing but it seemed to me he was taking his swing far to vertically and just getting his hands caught and than turning his body way before his hands every got caught up. (Did they even show Ernie on T.V. and if so did they address his swing I am curious to know).
Phil Mickelson – I watched the Phil for the majority of the front nine today with VJ and he just didn’t seem to be able to make the crucial approach shots or putts when it was called upon. His grandeur ability to make a run and get the crowd into just wasn’t there today. I am an immensely huge Phil fan and it didn’t please me to see that, but I thank him for always signing autographs and doing his funky little dance and nipping out for us. Good Tournament Phil. You handled yourself with class!
Chris Dimarco – Chris seemed to have this non-wavering aura around him in the afternoon. The morning session he looked just god awful. I am sure they showed his second shot on number 10, it was a near shank that I am sure half the people on this board could have hit better. When he shot his 41 I thought for sure as dead he was done. I was wrong about that though. He put an exhilarating performance in the afternoon session turning this into the best major I have ever seen (PGA 2002 is 2nd). I can only dream of what could have been if his chip on 18 would have fallen. Would have Tiger made his trademark crucial putt or missed it like he did? Chris missed at least 6 or 7 make able putts (some nearly gimmies). He wasn’t able to enamor his 1st Green Jacket but he sure did pick up quite a few fans along the way. Way to go Chris!
Tiger Woods – The man, The Myth, The Legend who made 7 straight birdies didn’t look like he could be beat. Everyone was whispering about a possible 59 but than The Machine known as Tiger lost an engine and shot 2 over the rest of the way. Even then I thought he will win this thing by 10 and remediate his critics. He birdied the fist two holes beautifully and looked like he was in control but than he hit an iceberg in the name of Chris Dimarco. Time and time again Dimarco put the ball inside of Tiger. Now I know Chris missed most of those putts but I truly believe Tiger missed most of his because he thought Chris would make most of his. Tiger didn’t have his same brashness and meretricious that he had in 2000. Tiger faltered and honest to God got lucky to win today. No question in my mind Chris was the better golfer today. Tiger made a great shot on 16(didn’t see it) but that ball could have hit any ball mark and gone the other way. If Chris just makes his putts he wins going away. Yet Tiger did achieve eminence and I will give him credit for that. Yet please don’t come on this board and tell me how he is back. He is back if you mean one of the best golfers if not the best in the world but his game is still not where it was in 2000. One last thing about Tiger is all of his fans screaming and whining about his bad breaks. Tiger putting the ball into the creek on 13 wasn’t bad luck; it was bad execution of his shot and a mental error. The only bad break he got was on the first hole on Thursday (his 10th) when he hit the pin. But he got more than his fare share of breaks this week. I congratulate him on a job well done, and can’t wait for the next Major.
I would just like to thank everyone here for giving me a place to discuss golf at because it is my passion in life. I cant wait to get to know each and everyone of you better. Lets talks some golf.
