Titleist 690.MB Irons Review

Just purchased a set of these the other day and installed Project X 6.0s in them. I played my first 36 holes with them today and I have to say that Titleist definitely has a winner in these clubs. It felt so good when I pured the shot and they are not as unforgiving as you think they would be. I just switched from Mizuno's grain flow forging and I actually prefer the feel of the Titleists. Definitely a 10/10 in my book.

Thats good to hear. Im looking into the 690 CB's. Im an 8 handicap, and if I remember correctly the 690 MB are harder to hit and less forgiving than the CBs, but more workable. Is this correct? Which of the two would fit me best?

Thanks -pinseeker

Yes you are correct about the difference between the two. It all depends. If you are a good ballstriker I would say go for the MBs.

To me, the 690 MB's are very easy to hit until you get to the 3 and 4 irons, but that is just the nature of long irons.

I did hit a great 3 iron second shot on a par 5 today, so they're not impossible to hit pure...it's just tougher than some other sets would be with the long irons.

mb=muscle back (blades), cb=cavity back. so yes, the mbs are more workable. and ignite, how are the project X shafts? do they make a difference then the stock shafts?

Well I wouldn't know about with the 690s, I never played them with the stock shafts so I wouldn't know the difference. With my old Mizunos they made a noticeable difference in accuracy and lowered my ball flight a lot. The ball flight with my 690's is also lower than average so I'm sure it made a difference over stock.

690.mb

my 690.MB 4-iron DGS300 was easier to hit well than my 670 4-iron DGS300.

These are great clubs...easiest blades I have ever hit. Shaping a shot is easy with these clubs. Mis-hits you don't loose much distance but you will feel it. I would compare them to Mizuno MP-33. These are great sticks.

I'm looking at buying either muscle backs or the new 730 's. I'm 9 handicap who can't putt.

The key point is the 3/4/5 forgiveness ,is there any or it pure or die?

One of the nice things about the 690 MB's and probably with any steel shaft set is that I haven't had the problem of any clubheads coming loose. I had graphite shafts with the two sets before I bought he 690 MB's with steel shafts. I had MAJOR problems with the Cleveland clubs coming loose. About 2 out of 3 were reglued and more than once. I also had this problem with the Taylor Made clubs I had before the Clevelands with a few clubs.

My guess is that this is more of a problem with graphite shafts, but I have used the 690 MB's in about 300 rounds and other than some wear, dings, scratches, etc. they play as good as new.

300 rounds?! Is that where my money went?

I played 58 18 hole rounds and 46 9 hole rounds in 2005. I live in Salt Lake, so I can't play every month, too hehe.

It's good to be single and live somewhere that has great fairly inexpensive public golf.

You can view many of these rounds by clicking My Scores and Statistics in my signature. Some rounds have photos...great souvenirs.

I worked 7:30 to 5:00 Monday and Wednesday, 7:30 to 3:00 Tuesday and Thursday, and 7:30 to 4:00 Friday this golf season. That gave me plenty of time for men's association and other golf in the afternoon.
