They're in the mail...

I've just ordered a set of MP-60's with TTDG SuperLites, R300 - 1 degree up and +1/2" long. Guess this will be a two part review, a before and after thing.

I've been a Ping Eye2 user for 16 years and since my handicap has dropped since buying them (I'm now a 9) I wanted to try something different - a forged "players" club with more feel and workability, with that soft "butter" feel when hit well. I opted out of blades as I thought that would be too big a jump for an old cavity-back boy. So, I looked at several sudo-cavity models and narrowed it down to Titleist 735's, Callaway X-Tour's, Mizuno MP-32's, or the MP-60's. The 735 were nice, but had a very harsh feel even when hitting the sweet spot - no butter there (but I still love my Vokey's). The X's were also nice to hit, but didn't have the workability I was looking for - and certainly weren't worth the asking price.

That narrowed it to the MP-32's and 60's. Did a lot of reading about these - according to most pro's and iron-junkies (and my bro-in-law who's a PGA teaching pro), these are the holy-grail of forged irons (and also according to legend - Tiger and Ernie used these before being swayed by greed and the darkside of the force).

To be honest, they're both schweet. I hit them several times over several weeks, even did some blind tests (taped 'm both so you couldn't identify them - tried the 3, 6, 7, and 8 irons). They look the same in set-up, but the 60's have a bit thicker top-line - nothing to get excited over though. Now, I really wanted to buy the 32's because of all the "club of the year" hype, the fact that they almost look like a blade, and because of how nice they look. But the more I compared the two, the more I couldn't justify buying a "good looking" club over one that gave me the same (if not better) feel and workability, but with more forgiveness. Mind you, it's not much of a difference, but you can tell the 32 from the 60 on mis-hits. I even tried to justify in my mind the popular combo set (3-7 in 60's and 8-PW in 32's), but there's even a difference in 8 irons when you don't hit them solid.

So, the MP-60's are going in the bag. I'll report back on how they actually measure-up after hitting them for a few rounds....

One thing's for sure, you'll never regret buying the Mizuno's, regarless of 32's or 60's.

Just got them and love them...

Played my first round with them yesterday. They are a good looking, sweet feeling set of sticks. My handicap is an 8 and I shot an 81. I tried several others but these felt the best. I like the weight and the way they look at address. Distance is about the same as what I was playing, maybe a little more. I know people have different preferences but I can't find anything I don't like about these irons.

Ok, here's part two of the review after 108 holes of golf at Myrtle Beach.

Setting up with these clubs is a breeze. Even the "thin" 3-iron top line wasn't an issue. Actually looked "natural," even after hitting the larger Ping heads for so many years.

It appears that these sticks have about the same distance as my Ping's but with a higher trajectory (was playing in 50 to 55 degree weather, so maybe a bit more distance....we'll see as Spring/Summer roll around) - distance control hitting into the greens was better (not as much roll). I suspect that the carbon steel heads being softer are the reason there was no increase in distance even though these clubs are slightly stronger in lofts than the Pings. I would definitely recommend getting fit before buying these clubs to make sure you get the right shaft to maximize distance (I'm glad I extended the shaft 1/2" and got the R300's in Super Lite weight - otherwise I think distance loss would have been significant).

The u-groove design seems to help the ball stop a bit quicker. I also found that working the ball was much easier than with the Ping's - a gentler cut or draw. Great control with consistent ball flight. Again, I think getting fit and correcting my lie angle helped here.

You will know when you mis-hit this club - not a "sting" to the hands though. Some loss of distance but the ball still goes straight (Glad I opted for the MP-60's and not the MP-32's). But when you hit it well, it does indeed feel like "butter" and has that nice crisp feel.

So, I'd say to this point I'm satisfied with the selection Will give more feed-back in the months to come....

just got my mp 60's today, but its raining! I finally put my T zoid pro's to rest since theyre release back in 97 I believe. I do notice the head is a bit lighter than the Tzoids. I got the dg s300 Anyone try the dynamic gold super lites in stiff with the mp 60's? I kinda like most of the weight concentrated on the head, but dont want any ballooning trajectory.

I just got my mp-60's about a month ago, there was still snow on the ground and I was dying to hit them! The snow finally melted about two weeks ago and have played about 7 rounds with them. There's nothing like puring a 5 iron with these babies!!!!! I used taylor made's before I got my 60's and I can honestly say I'll probably play Mizuno's for the rest of my life. It took a couple of rounds to get used to the smaller head size but know all is good. I also have dg s300 shafts. No ballooning here, just a beautiful penetrating ball flight!! I can't say enough about the Mp-60's. I'm in love!!!!!!!!

Finally had a chance to try out my mp's. All I can say is WOW I soiled my pants while hitting shots inside the bed of a pick up truck 160 yards away shot after shot. The feedback , and soft buttery feel is stellar. I know I have to get fitted, and check my lie angle otta the box they were laser accurate. The club weight is perfect , not too light, and not too heavy. The distance is amazing. Im about 1-1 1/2 clubs longer than my Tzoid pros. I was going to originally switch to the dg sl shafts to try hopefully pull an extra few yards, and gain some club head feel, but for now I am satisfied with its performance. The forgiveness on mishits doesnt penalize you as bad as others Ive tried. I think Mizuno hit the nail on these. Best irons imo they ever created. Im not going to even ponder the thought of trying the titliest 695's.

I ordered the 60's with a softer Rifle 5.0 shaft and I couldn't be happier, evidenced by 3 birdies on par-3's in my first round of the year. All those 2's make a card, don't you think? Thought about 735's but remebered how harsh my 990's were, so moving to forged from cast was a lot to think about! I doubt I will ever change again, but I am a bit of a junkie when it comes to this new technology, so we'll see. If you buy these irons you will not be disappointed.
Time to update my profile I guess.

Would these be forgiving enough for a medium handicapper like me? My ballstriking is pretty good and consistent. Like many others, the only reason I am not a single digit h/c is my short game. I have been eyeing them heavily seeing all these good reviews.

If it makes any difference I will be getting lessons to further the consistency of my ballstriking this summer, about the same time period when I will be purchasing new irons.

short game ? that is the easiest part of the game to get good at
you can practice it anywhere and there arent many moving parts, you can even use one club if you want
just a matter of developing touch ... practice , practice , practice

ya, the mp-60's are the real deal
mishits arent bad , ball seems to stay on the clubface forever
the long irons soar into the air but still have penetrating flight
no need for a rescue club now, the 3 iron does the job ( while still looking like a iron

get yourself a set , you wont regret it
