Just demo'd the Ping i5 set today and I have to say I'm very impressed. I've been a blade / shallow cavity forged iron player all my golfing life, mainly mizuno, and never even considered Pings.
I have a higher ball flight with these but no loss of distance, and off centre hits, well let's just say I couldn't tell the difference between good and bad shots!
The only place they lack is feel, but I'm prepared to live with that if it means better results
I've always wanted to play Ping's, and need to replace my irons. Can you give me any feedback on the G5 irons? I will be getting the steel shafts.
I know there are cheaper routes, so let's don't turn this into that debate...I'm more interested in the clubs performance for a mid - high 90's golfer.
I did not like the G5 irons, they felt really light to me. If you want to feel the cubhead in your backswing, avoid them. I would suggest Cleveland CG4 or Taylormade RAC. But don't listen to me, I have some issues with the way PING treats retailers that offer miltary discounts.
I didn't like them. Stayed with my Cleveland TA5s. I know you don't want the debate about "cheaper choices" out there so you won't get it from me. There are, however, better choices in both the retail market and in custom clubs.
I just bought a set of G2's. I hit the G5's and didn't really feel or notice a difference. Great set. Very forgiving and solid feel for a scratch golfer like myself.
I also play the G2's. I have had everything under the sun from MP-32's to tour issue Bridgestones. I always revert back to the G2's. Not as workable as the minimal offset forgings but on days when the swing is off the ball still goes right at the target. I would not trade that for the world. I really love the G2 HL options in the long irons as well. Very similar to a hybrid. I actually got the HL for the 3, 4, and 5 irons. I suggest giving these a try. Since they have hit the "classics" site on Pings website the prices have went down.

Actually, I got a really good (IMHO) deal on a 4-PW set of rac OS and 2 rac black TP's, so I pulled the trigger. Spent 1/2 the money and got nice, brand new clubs...even got them from a pro shop so I have no question about authenticity.
My G2s were stolen. I replaced them with G5s, they hit the same. I did have the G2 highloft 2-5. By the way, dumped the 2 iron for a G5 hybrid, which I like.

I know that story. Let me guess. Your retailer thanks the troops by giving them a discount on equipment. Then Ping thanks them by shutting down their accounts for selling at a discount, not matter how low. I used to love Ping, have 4 sets of their irons, three drivers, and a putter. Then I learned how they do business when we got shut down over $19.

If that's what you want, buy them. I didn't buy the G5 irons, but I am playing a G5 driver and love it. My dad play's G2 irons, G2 driver, and an old Anser putter and loves them all. Bottom line, they make outstanding equipment that most people love when they play them.
Even JJGolfPro loved them and has a bunch of their equipment.
IMHO, don't get caught up in the politics, buy the products you want because that's what will be best for your game.
No disrespect intended to anyone here, especially JJGolfPro...just an example.
Sorry, I forgot about this thread. No offense taken at all. Ping products are great, one of the best in the business. I just don't like how they treat retailers.
This is an example of how they do business with retailers.
My problem with the company is the way they treat their retailers. Some of their policies are ridiculous. They were the first company that I could remember to set minimum selling prices on their clubs. For those that remember, their products always used to say "Call for Price" in all catalogs. I have absolutely no problem with them not wanting their clubs sold too cheaply. What I have a problem with is how they police the retailers. They actually send spies into retailers and try to bargain with salesman. For example, one local head professional had a Ping spy come in and actually interupt the him while he was trying to host a USGA qualifier, pressing him for a discount. He specifically pursued the head pro after being told by the cashier that they did not sell Ping products at a discount. After a few minutes of going back and forth, the pro finally gave him 10% off to get him off his back (he clearly had more importantly things to do than worry about a less than $20 discount on a club). He said that a couple months later, he got a letter in the mail saying that his account was closed! This was accompanied by a copy of the receipt showing the amazing $19 discount given. No warnings or exceptions! Personally, I think that is entrapment.
What makes the least amount of sense about this is that Ping is losing retailers! This has happened to about 10 retailers in our section this season. Ping must have some plan for the future, although I can't imagine what it is!
But as was stated, don't let this affect your decision-making process when buying clubs. Most of the companies have pricing policy, it's just that none of them are nearly as strict.
