R7 Forged Irons

Just wanted to share some info about my new irons and posted a couple of pics for ya.
I bought these a week ago and I'm still get use to them but my first impression is that they're great. They have replaced my R7 TP's and I love the feel of the Nippon shafts.

Re: R7 Forged Irons

They definitely have a different feel - the sweet spot feels great and you certainly know when they've been mis-hit. The sole of the R7 Forged is narrower than the TP and everything else looks about the same. Still adjusting to the Nippon shafts which are supposedly 30 grams lighter than my old Dynamic Gold shafts. When I first hit them, the trajectory and distance seemed the same. Now that I'm getting use to them, the ball is climbing a little higher (which is what I wanted) but I can't tell for sure about the distance because of the driving range I use. The range is made of dirt (no sod) and the balls suck. I'll have the clubs out on the course this Friday for their first round. Hopefully, in a week or so I can give any of you interested folks a more informed opinion on their performance. Thanks for your interest!

Re: R7 Forged Irons

I had heard that those were Japan only releases...how did you get your hands on them?

Re: R7 Forged Irons

You can get them from an online company among other Japanese models called tourspecgolf.com. They cost $675 for 5-PW and another $70 for shipping. The 3 and 4 aren't available at that site and actually I haven't found them anywhere else (might not be available with new model coming out). I'm using Mizuno MP Fli-Hi 3 & 4 irons. You should check out that site because they have cool stuff and if you like Taylormade the new R7 TP Forged is coming out for 2008 (they're taking orders this month I believe) and they are sweet looking. They'll cost ya though - I believe they're $1080 for 5-PW and the 3 & 4 irons are almost $200 a piece. Anyway, thanks for your interest and I'll keep you folks posted as how my clubs perform on the links.

The Japanese golf club experts, Pro shop, discussions, and equipment reviews. Epon golf, Honma, Mizuno JPX, Fujikura Rombax, Mamiya AXIV, Nippon shafts, Titleist Granz, Miura wedges, TourStage golf, X-Drive GR, MP-57, Diamana ali islei shafts, R7 For was selling that 5 to PW set for $1000 USD in the Summer. That's crazy cash to be forking over for 6 clubs. I'd want 2 to PW or at least 3 to PW, so I could never justify the price.

The clubs are beautiful, and I've heard they are gamers...but I'd want the long irons as well and for that kind of cash, I couldn't do it...

I was in Tokyo about this time last year and went with my Japanese (and golfing) friend to a district that was nothing but golf shops one block solid on both sides of the street...I was looking for a two iron, and every shopkeeper just laughed when my Japanese friend explained what we were looking for...they all answered with a variation of "Japanese don't use those...that is only for big Americans! "

At the time I saw a taylormade r7 425 that was listed at just about $800 usd...if I had found the two iron I probably wouldn't have bought it anyway the way the prices were...

Re: R7 Forged Irons

Personally, I need a 2-iron. It's the only fail-safe way for me to keep the ball in play off the tee and still get substantial distance. I'd rather throw my driver and 3-wood in the gutter than lose my deuce.

Re: R7 Forged Irons

Here's an update to my feelings about the R7 Forged VS R7 TP. I've played a few rounds with the Forged irons now and had owned the TP's for most of the season. Unfortunately, I can't report any difference other than feel when struck. The distance and trajectory were the same which was a surprise to me. The Nippon shafts are 30 grams lighter than the Dynamic Gold yet feel the same as far as weight and kick. I think the R7 TP's are a better value for durability (won't bang up like forged) and definitely aren't as harsh as the forged on mis-hits. I'm not dissappointed in the looks of the R7 forged and they will be in my bag for awhile until I get the itch for something else. At least I know I won't run into anyone with another set of these irons in their bag and it will make for good conversation. Anyway, I hope this info is of help for anyone else.
