`Pub Talk` usually consists of a mixture of alcohol, male hormones and lots of raised voices vying to make a point to settle an argument . However, they can also lead to some good debates over the strangest of topics, from the heavy to the light-hearted. I thought it might be interesting to broaden the debate and see whether any GR members would be prepared to add their two cents (hopefully they will ) especially as I was outnumbered this week, and as with all good debates I thought I was right . This weeks topic was...
Are Angels Amongst us ?
My answer was yes they are :nodsmiley . My argument was that although they may not be of the winged variety, some people are born with an abnormally high amount of `good` genes. These people who are unaware of their genetic make-up are `selected` by nature to counter people who are born with an abnormally high ammount of `evil` genes. Although good and evil genes at present are undetectable by todays scientific measurable standards, that`s not to say they do not exist, or will not be `discovered` some day in the future.
Many people have an identifiable gene that dictates addictions, which can be anything from alcohol to gambling, and genes that dictate eye and hair colour are accepted as the norm nowadays, so is it inconceivable that some people are born with an abnormally high/pure amount of `good` genes. So such people may not be angels in a spiritual sense, they are `organic angels` by design of nature if you like, and have curtailed/stemed evil acts that have never `come to be`
I appreciate this is one of the heavier Pub Talk debates to start with, but I`d like someone to have a stab at it...

p.s. my favourite angel on film was Clarence, from `It`s a Wonderful Life`
CBC, has it been proven that there are genes that govern addictions? I'm not totally convinced that genes are a major factor in determining whether someone will be addicted to gambling or drinking or whatever. Addictions are physiological in nature and while I suppose heredity may play a slight part, I believe that a person's environment also has a large influence. The values and beliefs of a person may lead them to never even give those things a try, or they may have a better understanding of when enough's enough than others.
That said, I don't believe that there are "good" genes either....I'm of the belief that each person comes into this life with a clean slate and a chance to make all the conscious choices ahead of them freely without it being somewhat predetermined by their genetic makeup. A potentially good person under bad influences will almost certainly turn out bad, same as a potential bane of society will likely turn out to be a good person if they've spent their lives under the right influences. I wish I had more time to think about what I was saying there, as that was simply a first impression of sorts (my connection has been pretty rough the last few days so I don't want to type out a long-winded reply only to have the server be out again and lose it all. )
I really enjoy working on my compost pile: adding leaves, weeds, grass, twigs, shrub clippings, etc; adding just the right amount of water, turning the pile every couple of days, and checking the decomposition of the materials. Does this make me an "organic angel"?
Seriously, I believe that angels of one kind or another do walk the earth, and although they may or may not even out the evil done by spiritual or "organic" demons, their presence is important in providing the rest of us with hope and solace when we become discouraged by or suffer from the miseries of life. :nodsmiley
Card, this is an interesting article on genetics (http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article...2675_2,00.html), especially the part about how adopted children are susceptible to their parents addictions, even when they`re raised in an addict free enviroment. It seems that certain people are more genetically susceptible to compulsive behaviour. The feeling of euphoria could come from alcohol, smoking, gambling, shopping or even golf (like the buzz you get after a big drive down the middle of the fairway, or a birdie putt).
It`s only a pub talk guess but I think & hope there is a `goodness` gene. Maybe it`s this gene that makes certain people less self-absorbed, and gives them the strength to dedicate their entire lives to helping others.
