Is it me, or is the art of writing a clear and concise post on the decline?
I am not going to mention names, but it seems as if more and more posts are becoming harder to read. Since I haven't been a member long I probably don't have the right to complain about this. I am also aware that some of my posts may not contain perfect grammar, (I do seem to enjoy run-on sentences), and I realize this is not an English 101 forum, but it is helpful if your post is readable enough to respond to.
I have no intention of offending anyone here, I just wanted to vent.
I also hope I don't come across like an old, crabby school teacher.

If that's the case, we need more old, crabby, teachers here.
We moderators have tried to stress to the biggest offenders (believe me, they know who they are) that if they want to be taken seriously, they need to use at least a reasonable amount of proper grammar and above all.....USE THE SPELLCHECK FUNCTION!
No one likes to struggle to read a very poorly written post and such posts directly reflect the intelligence of the poster. While we're not all scholars, I find it hard to believe that our members can't get their message across in a more intelligent manner. Poorly written posts (and those that continue to post them) that show little or no respect for the reader get treated with even less respect on this end.
Nicely put dante and league. I'm not quite sure what the deal is with people who can't use proper spelling, grammar and punctuation. I'd rather they keep that kind of typing for IMs or chatrooms. It's not a race to get your post out on the forum....take a deep breath, slow down, check for errors with the spellcheck function, and then post. It's not that hard.

I read poorly written papers for a living (at least part of it). The last thing I want to read is a post that could have been written better by one of my more marginal students.
If that's the case, we need more old, crabby, teachers here.
Shame on you, leaguegolf!
You know better than to put a comma between the last adjective in a coordinate series and the noun it modifies! What kind of example does that set, putting a superfluous comma between "crabby" and "teachers"?
I expect a higher degree of mechanical perfection from a student like you!
Is that "crabby" enough? I've got the "old" part down pretty well!

I totally agree with the above posts about this subject, but that was too funny! I do feel the level of intelligence of this board has decreased since I joined, but I wonder if some folks are doing it on purpose. Seriously, how hard is it to write a clear, concise response to a post. I'm not demanding perfection, but it is nice to be able to understand the point that posters are trying to convey. Also, if you are unsure of the spelling of a word, to quote league: "Use the SpellCheck Function!"
Poor grammar and spelling doesn't really bother me that much as long as I can understand the point the poster is trying to make....except when someone puts a comma between the last adjective in a coordinate series and the noun it modifies! There's only so much I can take.
Folks, trust me, it is not just posters who can't write clearly. My nephew has made a very successful business out of ghostwriting for CEO's, local politicians, and well known, otherwise intelligent people who are asked to contribute to business magazines, Sunday newspaper supplements, etc.
My brother, the lawyer, tells me that half the really bright young attorneys in his office can't organize their thoughts coherently on paper although they are great at facts and the law. The admin assts (previously called secretaries) are doing the writing!
It having been years since I've had a child in school, I wonder if they still have kids write compositions? In St Ambrose Grammar School in my youth, every paper had two grades (History, English, Geography, whatever), one for content and one for English
grammar & composition.
I wonder if they still have kids write compositions?
Many are too busy "instant messaging" these days to write a complete sentence. It is very un-cool if you don't know the correct acronym.
I know they are trying to teach it in school (I have 5 in school), but they must "lose it" shortly after. Here in my office, our email "forces" spell checks, but doesn't "fix" the grammar. The text turns a completely different color, but yet they still ignore it.
<I sure hope this turns out ok, since I'm going to ignore the spell check....smile>
Thinking about this thread brought back some interesting memories:
Diagraming sentences.....surely a lost art!
Never end a sentence with a preposition....Kid: "Where's my ball at?" Mom: "Behind the at."
the Apostrophe!......my alltime favorite; hardly anyone uses it correctly.
effect/affect....really easy but constantly misused.
I'm once again amazed that those nuns, teaching classes of 40 or more elementary school children, managed to pound this info into our heads!
To you current schoolkids, my second grade teacher, Sister Athanasia, when giving us spelling words, taught us to concentrate on spelling them aloud ten times. I still use this memory trick for phone numbers, names, important work info, and it does imbed the fact into your brain forever! Can still dredge up stuff like the Preamble to the Constitution and Antony's eulogy to Caesar!
I think I've learned more about spelling and proper grammar here at GR that I have at school. If it weren't for two mods in particular, they know who they are, I still probably wouldn't know how to spell actually and always
Of course at my school, especially with my English teacher gone for the rest of the year, no one really cares if you spell right or not, so there isn't a lot of emphasis on spelling in my school, heck all they care about is if you do anything at all. Of course I'm not like that, I'm a good Christian Child and I've got, what's that word? Oh yes, integrity

Reason: Fixed "grammar"
Sweetie, if you are taking correction from some of the mods with good grace and learning something as well as enjoying your time here at GR, that says a lot about your character as well as the quality of this board. Nice to hear positive things from our young members!!!
P.S. If you don't mind me saying so.....it is spelled grammar, not "er".

Once big difference in your education and mine was that Sister Athanasia and her public school counterparts were encouraged to "pound" not only the information into our heads, but disclipline as well--with a paddle, a ruler, a stick, or a hand! Educators were able to acquire, maintain, and focus our attention in a way today's teachers can't; and that's how those nuns were able to teach classes of 40 or more and see progress. Oh, and some kids were allowed to fail--dare I say it?--they were "left behind" if they weren't willing or able to keep up.
