This happened just this weekend.....I have a niece, she is the beverage girl at a local course. She is 20, tall, thin and well endowed, (very good looking gilrl). She worked a golf outting this past weekend, base pay is $5 an hour, with her tips, she was making $54 an hour, 5 hours of work. She sold a foursome 4 beers, about $14, and was given a $40 tip by one guy. She also stoped a few other times, and they bought the same, but only got $2 tip each other time.
A couple days later the owner of the course talked to her.......She was told the "wife" of the guy that gave her the $40 tip called and complained about the tip and the wife wanted the money back. Wellllllllllllllll.......the owner, to keep the peace, told my niece that he was going to keep $35 off her next check, and was going to send it to the wife.
Sooooooooooo.....whose the wuss here ?????
Guy who can't stand up to his wife ?
Wife for asking for the money ?
Course owner for not standing up ?
Beverage girl for looking good ?
A woman's point of view: I would be willing to bet that one of big tipper's buddies told his own wife how good looking the cart girl was and his buddy tipped her $40. That wife called up big tipper's wife and started the stink. I think if the course owner wanted to keep peace, it should come out of his own pocket, not penalize the cart girl.
The cart girl should keep the tip, the course owner should tell the wife "Sorry, but we can't cover for your husband's behavior", but should at least pay the refund out of his own pocket if he feels the need to give 'em their money back, and the wife should deal with the husband accordingly. The wife should chalk it up to experience and the course owner should stand up for his employees, especially when they did nothing wrong, even if it means losing the guy's business.
I agree with what everyone else posted. The $35 shouldn't come out of your niece's next paycheck. The wife either shouldn't be refunded at all, or it should come out of the owner's pocket.
The golfer should ask his wife for his pants back! The wife should have punished only her husband! The owner should have told the wife to take it up with her husband! The cart girl was the only one without "fault"!
I would definatly stop and talk to the course owner and ask him what LAW allows him to with-hold payment from her check? If the girls father doesn't have the OO's then thats too bad.

1, YES
2, YES
3, BIG YES
4, oh please...she is the victim not a wuss.
Does this course have email? We should start bombarding them with email complaining about this action. Or maybe write to the USGA and have them pull this course's membership.
And I agree about the legality...if I remember correctly an employer can only withhold money from your paycheck if you sign a form authorizing this. This is what you do when you fill out the W4 so they can withhold taxes. For example, I have had occasion to be accidently overpaid, I had to sign a form to allow them to take the money back.
To me this is like calling Disneyland and telling them I didn't have a good time and I want my money back...that is MY problem not theirs.
The problem she has is......she is making very good money just on tips, it is only a summer job, they have other beverage girls that would get more hours than her if she makes a stink. So she said she will take the hit, but she was told by the owner that he would try to get her some extra hours to make up the difference, if she wanted them.
Its a small course, so next year, with the experience, there are some real big dollar courses (Resorts, CC) in the same area that she said she will go look at.
