Eating Hot Peppers, Cooling the Fire Down

Ok, I like eating raw hot peppers from the garden, clean them up, no need to cook 'em, down they go, but for the life of me struggle with the after part (no, not that you sicko!)....the mouth feeling like it's on fire!!!

How about sharing with me/us your way of cooling off the ole mouth, I know a glass of cold water's the worst thing you can drink, but does anyone chew or eat something that will douse the heat a bit or a good bit? I tried some ice cream last night and it did soothe it a little bit.

Some of you have to have some secrets to share with us Hot Pepper lovers, who'd like to knock down the heat a bit.

My mouth thanks you in advance.

One of our family friends were this family from Northern India. We've been invited to their house countless times, and had incredibly tasty curry. However, as you explained, the fire was pretty intense.

Now, during a meal, the most effective way is to drink hot water. Yeah, it'll worsen it, but oil washes off with hot water, NOT cold. Bear 2~3 seconds, then swallow. Voila, fire's gone, but you have tears in your eyes.

Now, AFTER a meal, they ALWAYS served very sweet ice cream with Kahlua topping. THey say that the ice cream will neutralize the acid in your stomach, and surprise surprise..it works! :) (the Kahlua is purely for taste, though)

Milk to drink. Bread to eat.

Bread acts like a sponge, soaking up the oils that burn your mouth. Milk has the same effect as ice cream, in that it is able to wash away the oils unlike water.

Any type of bread will help. Like you said, cold water does not work.

Seems like milk or hot water as the other poster and bread are among the consensus choices so far revealed.

I've always been told that carbonated beverages are the way to go - so Coke or beer is what I go for (lager only for UK readers, bitter/ale doesn't work)

For some reason, relish seems to work also. I like to sit at movies and eat nachos with peppers, but can't stand my mouth burning. So, after one bite with a pepper that gets too hot, I eat the next one with relish, and I'm ready for the next pepper.

I'll have to try that too! I love relish! That sounds like it might be a nice compliment to peppers to me.

re

This is a painful but funny story about hot peppers.
My mom always had a garden when I was younger. We were hosting a family reunion there one year. I thought I wuold "be a man" and pick a pepper from the garden. I never really payed attention to her garden. I went out and picked a pepper and ate it. I had grabbed a Habenero (sp?). That baby just about killed me.
My mouth, throat, and nose burned from this pepper. Well like a dummy I never washed the acids off of my hand. About an hor later I had to take a leak. So I stepped around the corner of our shed/ barn and took a leak. Now I not only had burnt my mouth I had those acids all over my mid section. PAINFUL.. at that time now a great family story.

Strong drink! It doesn't actually make the heat go away, but you'll care less. Nothing really takes care of a habanero, though.

Carbonated beverages work? Whenever I eat spicy food, I find drinking a Coke just burns my mouth even more.

If all you have is cold water, I'll keep it in my mouth for a while just to warm it up. I find it's more soothing that way.

You are right about the water.
Somebody mentioned hot water. Actually a lot of Indians have a hot cup of tea to accompany their hot meals.
