It doesn't really feel like it should be, but in some (many?) parts of the country, the typical hunting seasons are underway. I know here in PA, archery season has already started, and small game begins next week. I don't get to partake in it nearly as much as I was able to before, but still, a few weekends a year, I get out in the field and make my attempt to bag a few grouse, pheasants, a turkey, or a deer. Of course, here in PA, hunting is a favorite pastime of many (so much so that in PA public schools, students get the first day of deer season off), but I know in other parts of the country, seasons may vary.
As the season progresses, and I get out a few times, I'd like to get some pics of the bigger quarries if I'm lucky enough and will post them here. Anyone else, feel free to do the same. I always enjoy seeing pictures of what everyone else is picking up out there...call it living vicariously through others.
I did a lot of deer, small game hunting when I was younger. My father and I spent a lot of time in the woods together during my teens. I will say, I had no luck killing a deer until a few years ago (I'm in my 30's now). Now that my father has passed, hunting doesn't hold the same appeal as it used to.
Use to hunt until some drunk fool decided to pop of a couple rounds with a high powered rifle that hit the tree about 8" above my head. That was 42 years ago I think someone was trying to tell me something have not been back in the woods hunting since.
Bow season starts next week.... seen a few nice 8 pointers, too
When I go home for our break this weekend, I'll find out how some of my friends fared during our first week of archery. Good luck to you, and let us know how it turns out!
I love to eat venison and most wild game, especially birds, but I got tired of being up to my elbows in deer guts and blood. Not to mention the hassle of dragging a no-longer ambulatory deer out of the woods. Fortunately, I have two sons who are avid hunters, so there is usually venison available. I would rather hunt fish...don't mind the fish guts. I would still enjoy bird hunting if I have a chance. But these days, I spend more of my time hunting golf balls. At least I still get out into the woods.
As they say...shooting em is the easy part. Some don't enjoy what comes after, but in an odd sort of way, I don't mind dressing out the deer on a cold December day. The fingers tend to get a little cold in the chilly weather.

I hunt for deer and elk. But I really prefer the pheasant hunt. Ground is hard to come by that is not private when it comes to pheasants. Luckily, my inlaws have plenty of ground to hunt.
In high school I always hunted on my great grandpa's farm right behind the house, I've bagged a couple bucks and doe's......Im still lookin for my first Tom though, I cant hardly hunt those dang turkeys........

I lived for a number of years in a remote area of B.C. the mule deer were numerous but as we all know the day hunting season begins they do the old " vanishing act ". My son and I had spent four days hunting, we lost count of the number of does we came across but although there was plenty of signs of the bucks we had no luck. We were ready to call it quits and head back to my cabin, we were eating our packed lunch when my kid just about choked on his sandwich, " Dad, Dad, theres' a huge buck just inside the tree line over there " yeah right kid, but there he was. He was about 150 yards away but I was not going to squeeze one off from my 30/06 Browning unless I was sure to drop him, the cover he was in was too heavy. Oh he knew we were there, then he made a move, right out into the open, he was a beautiful four point and a real big guy. My old heart was pounding as I put him in my crosshairs, a well placed shot from 120 yards just behind the left shoulder and down he went, we had our winter venison. It was one of those things, the look on my son's face was a memory I will remember and cherish, what an experience to share and I guess it was just our time.
