High of 50 today after our first "winter storm"...did this instead of golf
Well, normally I would be playing at Valley View Tuesday afternoon, but we had our first "winter storm" of the season. The high was forecasted to be 50 and it was raining. Some of the mountains were snowcapped.
I went fly fishing instead. Not a bad deal. I'm very comfortable fly fishing in relatively cold and wet weather. Plus, the fall colors were spectacular!
Oh, the fishing wasn't bad either. There were some really beautiful browns in the area rising. I caught some. Here is a picture of the first one I caught. I caught another the same size later.
In this river there are browns, rainbows, cutthroats, tiger trout, and whitefish. I rarely catch anything other than browns in the particular spot I fished then.
I caught a small tiger trout the time before, but it was closer to the reservoir. Tigers were recently introduced.
Envy, envy, envy ....... as a keen fly fisher our nearest trout waters are 280km away and all fished are stocked and in still water. Just as well we can golf all year round even though the fairways are brown in winter and the courses rock hard (except for the greens which are mostly bent).
The third leg of this tripod is bird watching which goes well with both fishing and golf, fortunately we see lots of birds round here too.
Great pics - hope the trout tasted as good as it looked!

I don't think the bird watching is very good in this area. I haven't got into it much. I enjoy watching birds while doing other things. It doesn't seem like there is much of a variety here. I was watching a robin by the #10 tee today at Bountiful Ridge hehe. I am always happy to see the first robin of the year...I know I'm in for plenty of golf starting very soon! There are a lot of magpies (California Gull?) where I was fishing. Also, I see a bald eagle every now and then right where I was fishing. I saw one when I first got there this time. That is cool.
I have never tasted a brown trout. I like fish. I had fish last night. I used to keep a couple from Strawberry Reservoir, but the regs are now set so that pretty much every fish is in the slot. The fishing has been awesome there the past couple of years probably because of that. I caught a silly amount of big cutthroats last time out. Here is my fishing stuff.
It was cold! I couldn't keep my hands in the water very long...had to switch hands releasing the fish hehe.
The coldest fly fishing I experienced was in 11 degree weather. I was trying to dry fly fish, but the fly would be a solid ball of ice after a cast or two and of course the line and reel would freeze.
I remember using a zonker (big streamer fly) in some fast water that day and seeing up close a big trout going after the fly. I was casting the zonker a little upstream and it was right by me when the trout went after it. I think the trout flat out missed it. I never had it on the line or felt it. There was a lot of slack in the line at the time, though. It was just cool to see.
I really enjoy fly fishing when it's snowing. Some day we won't have to deal with the guides on the rod freezing completely closed, but just being out fly fishing makes it worthwhile to deal with. I enjoy the power day snowboarding and fly fishing trips.
