Braemar Golf Course in the Twin Cities area is said to be haunted by the spirit of a man who died shortly after the woods he was living in were cleared to make way for the course. Balls are said to suddenly go off line, putts to pop out of the cup after falling in. Mysterious.
I've heard of a course in British Columbia that's haunted by the ghost of a 1936 murder victim, Doris Gravlin. Seems Mr Gravlin strangled her, and now she assumes various forms near the 7th fairway of the Victoria Golf Course. Very troubling.
Parkland courses often have deep, dark woods. Links courses have lonely stretches of beach by the brooding sea. Heathland courses have their fabled moors. All of these settings have been associated with hauntings.
My question for you: Do you have a golf-course ghost story? Perhaps you were playing at twilight. You were playing alone. Or so you thought....
Tonight walking up 18, dark was falling (okay so my friend and i were playing by feel, we couldn't really see the ball)
A chipmunk or something was in the trees, making a ton of really high pitched chirping and whistling noises. Sounded like some sort of strange alien spacecraft...
This is a good thread. Never thought about this.
Only thing close is playing with a buddy of mine in a tourney here a cpl yrs ago, and his mom had just passed away.
EVERY off shot somehow hit a tree, took a favorable bounce, and he ends up putting for birdie. It was nuts. Just kept thanking mom the whole way.
It was pretty cool though.
Baltusrol should be haunted... I think its namesake was murdered and then his gravestone is spelled wrong or something. I read about it in GolfDigest back around U.S. Open time. You'd think Baltus Roll's ghost wouldn't be too happy, and would want to mess with golfers every chance it gets... perfect setting for the U.S. Open if you ask me.
The golf course where I work is haunted. It's the White Bear Yacht Club in Dellwood, MN. There are weird noises in the clubhouse, like the locker doors opening and closing when no one is in there. We also have alarms go off at night all the time because things are moving inside when no one can get in and no windows are open. Also, members have been said to have seen things on certain tees and greens where we know that mafia members were either killed or died. Spooky. I never play at night.
