Did you see the angry people in Miami?

I just saw the long lines on the news of people waiting on water, ice and gas in Miami following Hurricane Wilma. I could not believe how some people are blaming the government again. Those people had a WEEK to stock up on food and water for that storm. Here in Sarasota, I took my time, bought 2 jerry cans and filled them with gasoline, stock piled 30 gallons of bottled water and plenty of food. I just can't have a lot of sympathy for those idiots that did not heed the governor's warnings to get ready. They had over a week to do so. I guess you can never understand stupidity. Now they want to blame the government.

They saw all the handouts given to folks after Katrina, and figure why prepare when Uncle Sugar will just give me a new home and $2000 to spend any way I please.

What's really a shame is there are still hundreds of folks in Charlotte, Hardee and DeSoto counties waiting for FEMA and their insurance companies to rebuild their houses after Charlie.

Right...and once they do settle with the insurance companies, those companies turn right around and cancel their homeowners insurance. That's were the law should put its foot down. I am generally a political conservative, but there are times when big corporations need to be held in check.

Too many people think the government is here to bail them out.

Paradise...

My folks live in Orlando. My dad says every time something like this happens, a few people seem to be rethinking their 'ticket to paradise' and considering moving back up north. It's kinda like, "Hey...I didn't sign up for THIS!"

I guess we'll see a glut of sandals and plaid on eBay. Not my dad's, of course, he'll continue to wear 3 plaids at once.

drstroud, I'm not dissagreeing with you or any post on this thread, but take a look at your last pay stub this year. As much money as I have given the government over the last 20 years, I would expect something if a disaster ruined my life. Perhaps you're referring to people who don't support our government by paying taxes.

I won't argue with that...I think the government should help people. But what I am talking about is the attitude of some that the government owes them a living and that they are not responsible for their OWN safety and that of their family. Heaven only knows how much money the government wastes on stupid programs and pork barrel politics. Money that should be spent to help people rebuild their homes and communities. But that does not negate the responsibility we all have for using common sense in an impending crisis. Only a lazy fool, or idiot would not stockpile water, food, ect., when they know there is a huge hurricane headed their way. As for those clowns jumping up and down on tv the other day blaming the government for their own stupidity, I just laugh.

Too many people seem to not understand that it is their local goverment's job to be the first responders. We went through that with Katrina. FEMA is not a first responder agency. They come in after the local government has exhausted their resources.
