Received some really bad news today

Received some really bad news today, the company that I have worked at for the past nine years laid me off toady, got a couple leads from a friend that I hope to follow up on tomorrow. I guess you just never know one day you are working thinking every thing is ok the next your out of work, maybe in a few weeks will be able to report some good news.

Geez, Halk, I'm really sorry to hear that. From your posts, I can tell you're a really decent guy, and a company can never have too many principled individuals such as yourself. I'm afraid that this stuff happens; it's the rare person who manages to get all the way through a lifetime of work without having something like this occur.

Revealing my lack of wisdom, I went to Google and did a search for "laid off" "what to do". Among other things, I found this:
http://www.usatoday.com/careers/news...-downsized.htm

I like the points about being good to yourself at this time and networking like crazy. I'm sure you've established good relationships with people both inside and outside your company. Use them. People will want to help.

This looks potentially helpful, too:

Hang in there, Halk. Be patient; it's a process. In time, I'm sure you'll be coming back (maybe even to this very thread) with good news.

Jim

I'm so sorry to hear that! I'm sure it must have been a shock, especially since you just got back from your China trip. It's amazing how quickly your life can change in a day. I wish you success in finding a new job quickly. (I know there are lots of jobs available in Gulf Coast area.)

Thank you very much Jim the one thing that you really need at a time like this is friends and that’s what I feel that I have here, even though I have never meet any of you in person over the past year you all have come to be very good friends. At first I though about not posting the bad news but again I go back that you are all my friends and that’s what counts more than anything just knowing that you have friends. I certainly hope that it want be to long that I will post good news.

Thank you all

Hal

That really Halk. As Pings posted , I've heard there are a lot of openings in the gulf coast area. That's not too far from you. Ironically, the 28th was Black Friday for my Deptartent. 40 people got the axe(out of about 100). I work in IT. I've been spared so far. The "global economy" is hitting everyone. What next ... cut-rate Drs. performing surgery by remote control from Asia ? It's going to be a bumpy ride for the next decade or so for everyone. Best of luck to you, Halk.

I've found that things generally happen for a reason Halk. Maybe this reason is the great new job waiting for you just around the corner. Hang in there buddy.

I resigned a few months ago. I've been trying to get something else, but I have enjoyed the time off. I enjoy the outdoors here and it was a great time to have plenty of time.

Good luck finding other work. If they have lay-offs for long term employees like that you will probably be better off working somewhere else.

I'm really sorry to hear that, Halk. But I'm sure you'll bounce back. My dad's been laid off a couple of times from different companies (I think he's bad luck) and I know it's never easy, but you'll get through it.
