Ok, I guess it's time to explore this topic...It's been reported that China has its first three human case of bird flu, with two of those people dying.
(1) Do you think your government officials are responding to this quickly enough? (2) Do you think it will be pandemic?
(3) Are you scared?
I don't belive it will be anymore serious than the lime tick desease or Mad cow.......as long as you don't sleep with any birds you don't really know their history, you should be fine.
(1) I think at the moment any response at all is plenty
(2) No
(3) No
I'll start worrying a bit about it if it mutates and people start dying regularly from it. I'll worry a lot if I catch it. Otherwise, I couldn't really care less about it. People die all the time. To worry about one particular form over another is just strange.
I suspect that you are far far more likely to catch skin cancer from going outside in the sun. Are you going to stop playing golf because of the risk of skin cancer? I'm not. Nor am I going to worry about something that's killed 60 odd people worldwide in 8 years.
I don't know CHIRP CHIRP what everyone is CAW-CAW getting all worked up about.
I personallyHOOT HOOT come into contact with a variety of birds on a daily basis and CLUCK CLUCK nothing has affected me yet!

This is something, I've finally gotten used to your posts now and have come to expect this response from you -- over the last 1,500+ that I've been a part of here...OMG, does that make me Coo Coo?
Avian influenza doesn't seem like much of a threat here, nor does it really scare me as such. Sure, it has potential to be harmful, but so do a lot of things, yet we don't always go out of our way to avoid them.

Ok, sorry. On a more serious note, the vaccine will probably adversely effect many more people than the bird-flu itself. A handful of people die world-wide from an obscure and rare form of flu and we're supposed to vaccinate the entire country?

Maybe I'm naive, but I think the government is probably doing as much as it can at this point. The best thing would be to have an effective vaccine (or sure-fire treatment) against the form we're worried about but has not yet emerged: a strain that transmits easily from one human to other humans. Until that happens (if it happens), we don't have anything to isolate and devise vaccines and treatments for.

I wouldn't be surprised if, sooner or later, the "H5N1" virus somehow (by spontaneous mutation or after interaction with a virus that does move easily among humans) gives rise to a form that is pretty contagious among humans. In this day of easy international travel, something like that could get around the globe pretty fast, I would think. If that happens, we may have a challenge. Hopefully, drugs we already have on hand (if supplies are adequate) will be helpful, and vaccines and drugs specifically targeted against the new strain can be developed. Humans have little natural immunity to new viruses (which is why they're so virulent at first), but at least some people will have good natural resistance to the new strain.

Not really, at this point. Just kind of waiting, like everyone else.
