I got back from the grocery store a little while ago and was going over my receipt. As I reviewed my purchases, I noticed a discount that I've never gotten before - a Senior Citizen's discount! I think it is wonderful that the grocery store offers this, but at 48 I'm not quite ready for this discount. I'm used to the typical questions about my age from the kids at school - "Were you born when they bombed Pearl Harbor?" and the questions I used to get from my girls when they were little - "Did you like wearing those ugly Pilgrim's shoes?"
The cashier was a young teenaged girl, so maybe I do look old to her. I guess my vanity is a little bruised and had to go take a quick look in the mirror. I guess the L'Oreal hair color is not doing its job.
(I could certainly understand the discount if Forged had been with me when I made the purchase! He said I should just be thankful for the extra savings. )
Im 59 and my wife is four years younger, but a couple of years ago, my wife went along with me to my doctor's office. After the nurse called me back, a lady sitting across the room asked my wife, "Your 'son' looks like he is doing pretty well"....when I got back from seeing the doc, my wife was in a huff...it took two hours to finally get it out of her what had happened....I laughed until I thought I would pass out...my wife told me if I did'nt shut up, she would see that I really did go into the hospital...my wife is very gray headed, but I have a full head of hair with only a little salt and pepper it in...talk about treading on dangerously thin ice...man, was my wife fuming...she still tells that story and looks like she wants to kill.
I,m sure the teller girl made an honest mistake! or could be she just likes giving friendly folk discount, when I was 16(many years ago) I worked (6 months) for a sports shoe outlet on the outskirts of Manchester.
Young kids 10-14 would come in with their parents and grandparent(s) and ask for the latest fashion sports shoe(mostly expensive) but if I thought they were being a bit brattish or the grandparents looked a little worried about the cost then I,d point them to a cheaper shoe or say we did not have the kids size in stock. I probably saved quite a few grandparents and parents a little money and if people were friendly I,d give them the 15% plastic discount cards we had. Whenever I saw kids with their grandparents shopping I always thought of my Gran whom I loved and still miss very much!
hey, i'm 44(and told i look 34) and one of the cashiers at my supermarket gives everybody the senior discount. i called her on it once(and only once). a discount is a discount. she's just looking out for all the customers. i appreciate it.
I'm 50, grey hair everywhere.. didn't get married until 35... had a boy at 36...
and am frequently asked if he is my grandson. Guess that's payback from
when he was a toddler with long blonde hair... and i was frequently told
"Your daughter is so cute. How old is she?"
I remember when my Mom turned fifty and received an AARP application in the mail! You'd have thought they had cast aspersions on her whole family tree! But after her pride stopped stinging, she filled it out, got her card, and used it every time she could!
PingsRbest my wife (who is the same age I am 58) (BTW she looks younger than 58) get's upset about the senior discounts, not me I take everyone i can get and if they do not offer I tell them that I am 58 a senior citizen and proud of it.
I work for Lance Inc. One of my accounts is a restaurant named Ziggies Cafe. I was waiting for the manager to pay for his invoice when I overheard this conversation.
An elderly lady was cussing the manager. He is from the middle east. She started calling him everything she could think of. She said things that would make a sailor blush. After she left I was talking with the manager about this lady. She had turned 65 that day so she came in for her new Senior Citizen Discount. The catch was she ate there the night before when she was 64 NOT 65. She demanded her discount. Even knowing she was not 65 the night before.
I see this one a lot too. An elderly man or woman....men in most cases, will come flying into a stores parking lot. Slam the brakes and then get out and walk into the store with his/ her walker.
I can go on about senior citizens but Ping now needs to call AARP and join a local Senior Center. lol
Some people think i'm older than i actually am, too... but not quite to the point where i get a senior's discount. Some say a couple years, maybe around 18, 19 or 20...(turning 17 next month)...
People at the golf courses around here seem quite skeptical when i tell them i'm a junior... then again, they would rather charge me $60 opposed to the $30 i get away with paying at this age... means more money for them.
People assume I'm younger than I really am. I know last summer people were asking me how my first year of high school was? I told them, "It was great, 2 years ago. Now I'm going into my Senior year." Then they didn't believe me so after the round I would get in my car and drive away. And they would watch.
Now I look older though, I think. If I got a haircut I could probably buy alcohol and not get I.D.'d. But I'd never do such an underhanded thing like that... :P
I'm sporting a grey haired goatee right now..but when I'm clean shaven, I get carded at the ABC store, the grocery store, the bar... every time I go. Really irritates the wife.
(I'm pushing her to bump her age 7 years so we can get an AARP card for the discounts. I love being frugal.)
HAving seen the photo ,I find it difficult to believe Pingsrbest is over 30.But that may be a reflection of my age rather than hers. Take the discount and run.
The cashier was a young teenaged girl, so maybe I do look old to her.
That's the reason. Anyone over 25 could be 30 or 60 to them for all they know. I'm constantly amazed at meeting my kids teachers during Parent-Teacher conferences, having been told they're "about your age", only to find a 35 or 60+ y/o sitting in front of me. I wouldn't worry Pings, when I 1st glanced at the pic from the recent golf outing, my first thought was how nice it was of Forged to bring one of his daughters along.
I am 48 and have never been offered a discount....should i be ticked.
and if they have that built into the profit line why shouldn't i get it also....i have some grey........................
