Question Your pay raise for 2006

This is not only the holiday season. For many of us, it's also the season for year-end performance reviews and salary increases. What percent increase are you expecting? (Not hoping for, but expecting.)

I got my yearly raise last month, and after a lot of posturing and debate I received a 19% raise. The only bad part is I think I'm still underpaid I just hope the Christmas bonus helps close that gap.

Well on the 18th I turn 18 and get a 50c increase just due to the fact that minimum wage is higher if you're >18. Then on February 1st 2006 minimum wage increases again by (I think) 30c. So I think it's about a 12% increase by February 1st 2006 (current wages $6.95/hour, projected wages $7.75/hour).

Since I'm self employed, and this year things have been pretty lean as I build my business, I expect big things from 2006. Can't be much worse than this year really, since basically I'm into negative numbers if you figure how much I've made versus how much I've borrowed!

Well I'm a Union member(IBEW local 304)so my yearly raise is negotiated. We just signed a 3 year contract and we get 3% a year plus benefits. It doesn't sound like much but we make a pretty good hourly rate and I work a lot of overtime.

We're entering our 3rd year of the new company. Hopefully, the major sacrifices are over! Since we are more commission (than salary) driven, expectations are high...25%.

Hmmm. Looking at results so far, maybe I didn’t create enough top-end choices for this poll. I based the choices on these numbers for the USA in 2006:

4.1% increase in monthly Social Security and SSI benefits
http://www.ssa.gov/pressoffice/pr/2006cola-pr.htm

3.7% average increase projected by a Human Resources consulting firm
http://www.careerjournal.com/salaryh...whatsnew_minor

~3.5% average increase anticipated by other experts
http://www.latimes.com/business/la-1...home-headlines

3.1% average increase for federal employees
http://federaltimes.com/index2.php?S=1310029

3.1% across-the-board increase in military basic pay
http://usmilitary.about.com/od/payan.../06authact.htm

2.7% inflation rate expected by one group
http://www.globalinsight.com/Perspec...Detail2332.htm

Outside the USA, increases will apparently be higher, at least in some parts of the world.
http://www.mercerhr.com/summary.jhtml?idContent=1189230

Here’s a by-country look (limited to the technology sector):
http://www.culpepper.com/eBulletin/2...ndsArticle.asp

I’m no expert, but I imagine that increases will vary widely by country and industry, so the above numbers are ballpark figures at best. Anyway, best wishes to all for a prosperous New Year. And remember: Money is not the biggest factor in job satisfaction!

I got squat last year, so this year if I don't get 10%, I might hit the door. They've been trying for over a year to hire more people for my position and can't find anyone qualified, so I think I'm in a really good bargaining place.

Ditto. They've laid off half of my Dept in the past 2 months and we'll probably get a 10% cut, in the form of 1 day off without pay(every 2 weeks) for the contract being negotiated. I would've left years ago, but the pension rocks and I'll be able to retire with full benefits in a few years.

No salary - 100% commission. However, growth in sales has been running at about 6-10% over the past 5 years and see no reason for growth not to continue at the same rate. After many years of working a territory with minimal interference from management, I can't imagine going back to having my income dictated by people and events outside my control.

My pay raise won't come until July 1, 2006, but it will be 4%. My raises are at the mercy of the state legislature and decided for the biennium each session. This last year I got a 2%, but they also added a step to our pay scale, about 4.5% also. I am still severely underpaid in my profession, (engineering), but my retirement rocks. 75% after 30 years (25 if you buy the five they allow and I did). I will retire at 43. Worth the lackluster pay.

A couple of years ago the company "granted" a 2.5% increase to everyone within my peer range. That was the first increase I had in 3-4 years, and haven't seen another one since. We do get a yearly bonus, based on certain criteria, but they've been minimal (though appreciated). Many of my friends and co-workers have been let go over the past couple of years.

I'm glad to be employed at this stage of my life, and looking forward to retiring within the next 2-4 years (maybe sooner than expected ).

increase? this last year was good as it increased by over 30%, but for the time being, I'm "topped-out", so to speak. Now I just need to move higher up the food chain, or find a better paying job before I graduate with a B.S. (ha ha) in 12/06
