eavesdropping on U.S. phone calls

....I see where evryone is starting to get upset because President Bush authorized the eavesdropping on domestic U.S. telephone calls to fight terrorism. I say "good for him" , I agree with him, and if it helps catch any terrorists planning attacks on our country , .. very good. Why would anyone get upset over eavesdropping on phone calls made in the U.S. UNLESS you are up to no good, and plan to cripple the U.S. I say do what you have to do to stop terrorism . When we were hit on 9-11 , it was an act of war on our country. ....... and , for that matter , NUKE 'EM

We had this whole debate up in Canada a couple of months ago. Frankly, even if people aren't up to no good, they feel their privacy is protected and nobody (even those trying to protect them) is allowed in.

I think, if you've got nothing to hide, it's no big deal. Apparently it is a big deal to other people though, which I find a bit much.

Let me ask you this...Do you like people to know what romantic things tell your wife on the phone? Would you like anyone to know your very private information that you give to banks, schools, work, or even your children? Do I, as an american, have something to hide? Of course I do. We all do. There are some very private issues that go on in our lives that we don't want anyone else to know about. It is none of anyone's business. It is very ignorant to think that this "spying" is going to eradicate terrorism. To think that you are willing to let someone who has constantly lied to the U.S people about WMD's and the need to sacrifice our troops in the middle east for his own agenda is appalling. This witch hunt is destroying the very fabric of our constitution...the rights for which everyone before us has fought for. OUR RIGHT TO PRIVACY. Do you find it funny how we can find a dictator in a hole under a metal door covered by dirt in the middle of nowhere, but they "have to" spy on the every single american person to find out whether or not we are "terrorists"? That's ridiculous. Please look at the big picture before you feel you need to "NUKE" anyone. If the president says that he is fighting for our rights as americans, why is he trying to take them away? Please do not believe his propaganda.

ps. Please don't think I want to fight with you, for you are entitled to your opinion and I'm sure that you are a good person. I would rather play a round of golf with you than argue.

IMO, I'd rather be safe than sorry. If eavesdropping on conversations can prevent even one terrorist attack, I'm all for it. Like wheoever's monitoring the calls really gives a flip about what I say unless it's a security-related matter.

Not only that but they won't care what you say to your wife or kids, or whatever private information you have if it's not a matter of national security. Keep in mind they'll be listening to thousands of other people, and if they have any sense of humour about their jobs, chances are they'll find much more entertaining people to eavesdrop on than any one of us.
"Spying" won't eradicate terrorism, but when you really think about it rationally, nothing will. At least this will slow it down a little bit. I think Bush is just looking at what went wrong on Sept. 11th and making sure it doesn't happen again.
By the way, I really am not a fan of Bush. Nowadays, I can't see any political figure that's any good (Canadian or American... we've got an election coming up and I'm not gonna bother voting for the least of 3 evils). But George W. Bush seems to be a man of action, who works towards what his heart (and unfortunately his wallet as well) dictates. In a time of war, frankly, I'd say that's the kind of leader any society needs.

If you don't believe that people (US government and others) aren't listening in on your converstations then you may be oblivious to how communications works. Unless you have a device that encrypts and decrypts your conversations then they are out there for anyone to tap into. I can tell you for a fact that the government has been doing this for decades so why is a big deal now?

Because we just found out and now we have to make sure we don't accidentally say the wrong thing or the FBI will haul us away!

If you've got "very private issues" in your life that you don't want anyone to know about, why would you be blabbing them on a telephone anyway? Do you honestly think cell phones and cordless phones are secure places to tell your innermost secrets? Wiretaps have been going on for decades and if the President of the United States thinks listening in on some coversations will increase homeland security then I say listen all he wants.

BTW....If the President wants to know what's really going on all he has to do is ask my Aunt Donna. She's got more gossip from telephone conversations than an army of CIA/FBI agents!

.....there's no privacy anymore, cell phones have GPS tracking units in them , "ON STAR " systems have GPS units in the cars you drive, and , they CAN flip a switch and listen to what you are saying as you're driving around , and you don't have to activate it to get their help as you're led to believe. The government is fixing to zero in on Bin Ladin by way of his cell phone and bust him with a bomb, watch the news stories very close the next 12 months or so , Nasa is tracking him right now because he is still stupid enough to have a cell phone. If you want privacy, don't talk to anyone else except in person. You can bet that TV's , and probably computers , can be activated to where the government, or somebody , can be made to "listen" even while the unit is turned off. I'm not scared or paranoid , because I've got nothing to hide.
