A few years ago, my wife and I were in Philly, during a visit back to PA to see family and friends. After parking the car around 8th & Spruce, we were walking toward Independence National Historical Park to meet a couple of friends for a meal at City Tavern. Walked into Washington Square. Pleasant little place: criss-crossed by sidewalks, trees, benches to sit and relax on, etc. Nice place, nice day, not a care in the world.
Off to the side I noticed a monument with a flame. Went over to have a look. It was, of course, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier of the Revolution. Turns out this pleasant little place, during the American Revolution, served as a mass, unmarked-graves burial site for over 2000 American soldiers, plus others. Words inscribed on the monument:
Freedom is a light for which many men have died in darkness.
Made me stop and think, I'll tell you. Still does.
Happy 4th, my friends.
