Thumbs up Late Nights....

About a month ago I was up late and just couldn't sleep. I had been GR for about as long as I could so I turned on the boob tube and started looking for something other than infomercials. I happened on a late night show with Craig Ferguson, a comic from Scotland. I thought he was great!!!!! Now I look forward to his nightly monologue (It comes on at Midnight here) and seldom get to sleep before it is over. Wondering if there are any other Ferguson addicts out there?

I was disappointed when Craig Kilborn left this show. I've since been a fan of Ferguson as well. He's been a good choice as replacement for Kilborn, in my opinion. Funny show.

Never seen that particular show as I live over in Blighty. But the best Scottish comedian has to be Billy Conolly, providing you can put up with his rather colourfull language.

I work at night and we have a TV on in the office most of the night. Ferguson is great. Right now we are watching a tape of todays Pebble Beach Pro-Am. PBS is another station that stays on most of the night. The wife and I donate a nice sum to them every year so I figure I should at least check up on how my monies are being spent.

Ferguson is SO much better than Conan O'Boring. From what I understand, Ferguson does his monologue without cue cards, just off the top of his head. If I'm watching TV at that hour instead of working at the computer, I'll watch his monologue, then his first little schtick at his desk, or the stupid skits he does. Then it depends on who his guests are whether I stay tuned in or not. There's always an episode of "Walker: Texas Ranger" on the Hallmark channel if Ferguson's guests are boring!

Gotta love Billy Conolly in The Boondock Saints. Great movie there, although it has quite a bite of colourful language as well (ironically none from Billy). That's pretty much all I know him for.

Take that back right now! Conan cannot - I repeat, CANNOT! - be beaten. His show is the only reason I ever stay up that late at nights. His monologues and opening sketches at his desk are absolutely hilarious.

Oh yes, the 700th time Conan drops below the camera and then pops up again is hilarious. Everything he does is a rehash of stuff he did the first 3 years he was on. His "banter" with the band makes changing the channel a Pavlovian response. The last thing original and partially funny Conan had on his show was the "Walker:Texas Ranger" handle. And he proceeded to run that into the ground. The only time Conan's show is interesting is if he has a guest that can carry his lameness.

Ferguson is fresh, funny, and doesn't need a second-rate band to play off of when things get slow. You can settle for Conan, that's your choice. But anyone with a real sense of humor and an appreciation of good late-night entertainment has to be ready for more than the leftover skits and repetitive sight gags of Conan O'BORING!

w/e, different strokes for different folks I guess. Personally I don't watch Conan too often, so when I do, I find it a treat. Plus, I don't even bother watching the guests; I'm in it, like I said, for the monologue and opening sketch at the desk.

I'll admit I haven't watched Craig Ferguson, but I have a feeling it's across the board where there's bound to be some repetition among all of the late-night shows. Really, how original can they be night after night? I say, Conan's got a good fanbase, so cut him the slack for the fact that he must be doing something right. Just like Craig Ferguson, David Letterman, Jay Leno, et al are also doing something right.

Well, of course you are right, it is a "newness" thing. Four years from now when Conan replaces Leno, someone will step into Conan's spot. By then, if Ferguson is still hanging in there, his stuff will probably be getting pretty weak! So then the new guy in "Late Night" will probably be more entertaining. I'm sure we're ALL waiting for SOMETHING original and entertaining on TV!

I don't find either one of them all that funny, though Conan does have some very clever skits and set pieces on his show. Ferguson and his show I can take or leave.
