well.... finally happened. been riding motorcycles for a while now and finally went down. coming to a stop sign at about 20mph hit a patch of sand on the painted surface of the road. for anyone that rides knows what a deadly combonation that is to a biker. front wheel locked and cocked hard to the left sending me over the handle bars to the right. i was in gear so im ok for the most part. just very mad, and frustrated. but eh what can you do. everyone wrecks at least once. glad mine was at 20mph and not 120mph.
mizuno - Also glad to hear that you're OK. With dropping your bike it's not a question of "If" it's a question of "When?" My last incident was some 30+ years ago. Similar to you I was going around a corner when my front tire went over some ashes. The bike went down, both tires hit the curb sending the bike 8-10 feet in the air. Guess where it landed! My leg was caught between the fork and the exhaust manifold -- very hot. Sold the bike shortly afterwards. I like golf a whole lot better even though I was once hit in the chest by an errant drive!
I'm glad to hear you make out OK! I've never been on a motorcycle because I've always been afraid of taking a fall. One of my good friends in high school was almost killed in an accident with her boyfriend and that was enough to keep me from ever getting on one.
road rash minor, just some on my right flank and my elbow. i was in leather but the jacket kinda slid upwards so it got my bare skin on my flank. the elbow is from actually rubbing inside the jackets nylon lining. my neck and shoulder were a little stiff but nothing that kept me from the daily rutine today.
as for the my first thought when i was going down was "no way this is happening" first thought after i got up was "no way that just happened" and last thought before the pain set in "asphalt is really hard".
i didnt have a chance to save it. it locked and cocked so fast. it didnt even give me a tank slap. the guys i was riding with said it was the fastest they had ever seen somone go down. just up one second and on the ground the next. i had the presence of mind though on the way down to get my hands outta the way and take the blow in the shoulder. i do not need broken wrists or fingers.
the bike is ok for the most part. fairing damage, mainstay bracket snapped but nothing came off the bike so thats good. it didnt hit the swing arm or the gas tank so that will save me some $$. id say less than 2k worth of damage. thanks for the well wishes everyone. if i could figure out how to attach pics id post some of the bike. lol
Most ER doctors call them "murder cycles". I had a Kawasaki 305 in the early 1980s. One morning, I hit a pavement lip at about 40mph, and the bike went one way and I was squirted onto the pavement like a bar of soap and slid along the road for about 100 feet. I had a helmet and heavy riding gear on and only suffered some bruises and a bit of road rash. But I got gun shy afterwards and sold my bike. One motorcycle police officer friend of mine has been in the hosptal with serious injuries 6 times. He said it is not a case of "if" you have an accident, but "when" you have one. If you ride, you WILL have an accident. I decided the "fun factor" was too heavily outweighed by the "danger factor". It's just not worth it. These fools here in Florida that ride without a helmet or protective gear better have their personal affairs and life insurance in order.
I went over the handle bars at about 40mph, spread eagle on the pavement, bounced about two feet and came down on my left shoulder and ended up in the ditch. I've been a fan of four wheeled vehicles ever since. Like fly boys say, if you can walk away from it, it was a good landing.
