Alright I was reading on another forum about Nirvana and of course Guns n' Roses came up. I personally like Nirvana more, I feel they changed music forever. Guns n' Roses did have an awesome first album and some really good singles but thats it. Who do you guys like better?
Other than Led Zeppelin, GN'R is my favorite band ever (see my avatar haha). Anyway, I like Nirvana but in my opinion, GN'R is the band that REALLY kickstarted the end of hair metal. Their record label tried to market them as a hair metal band (see the WTTJ video), but I think everyone quickly realized that GN'R was really not a hair metal band with a commercial pop sound. Rather, they brought back the sounds of AC/DC, Rolling Stones, and punk music and threw it all together. Despite them releasing such a great first album (15-20 million copies sold in the U.S.!), somehow hair metal limped along for a few more years until Nirvana and the grunge sound finally leveled it once and for all.
Despite everyone in the music business giving Nirvana so much credit, I really do think if it weren't for GN'R, hair metal probably would have lasted even longer than it did. Another thing that puts GN'R ahead of Nirvana for me is the difference in the arrangements. GN'R put out more complicated music in my opinion (especially the UYI albums) compared with Nirvana's more simplistic sound. Like I said before, I do like Nirvana, but GN'R was a return to the classic hard rock style that had been missing for quite a while and since I love classic rock like Zeppelin and the Stones, GN'R is more enjoyable than Nirvana in my opinion.
Yea some people say that. To be honest, I really don't find them that depressing. If you listen to their early live shows you may find it differently since they are pretty easy going when they're playing. Maybe listen to songs like Sappy, White Lace and Strange, Marigold, Been a Son, School, Old Age and their covers of Molly's Lips, They Hung Him on a Cross and Jesus Don't want me for a Sunbeam. My personal favorite songs are Frances Farmer Will have Her Revenge on Seattle, Sappy, Smells Like Teen Spirit, Lithium and Drain You, Heart Shaped Box, Very Ape, and Radio Friendly Unit Shifter . The MTV Unplugged album is absolutely incredible and would recommend it for anyone who has yet to listen to it...

I guess its just me but I like the simplistic guitar stuff. Its simplistic in chords but man does he bend them to no end. Creating sounds that just are incredible. Don't get me wrong Slash is an incredible guitarist, even though I don't really like him as a person. I think we both can agree that music today need a good kick in the rear end to get something new out there quick. Emo must come to an end like Hair Metal had too back in the late 80's

Same can be said about Cobain (great guitarist, but if you ask me anyone who commits suicide isn't a great person in my opinion...The Bible says you're going to **** for doing that sort of thing). Slash is a jerk, but I think probably the biggest jerk in rock and roll is probably Axl Rose. That guy broke up one of the best bands ever simply by letting his ego get waaaaaaaaaaay too large.
The two things that I find similar between Nirvana and GN'R are this: potentially annoying singers and really great music. I know many people consider Axl an annoying singer, and for some reason Cobain's voice gets on my nerves pretty quick sometimes (especially on "You Know You're Right"). But they both made awesome music. Edit: I just thought of a 3rd thing...they both self-destructed way too fast.
The new GN'R has some pretty good music (I've got 4 leaks and 3 live bootlegs, so 7 new songs...they are nowhere near as good as old GN'R, but still pretty good) that I think will kick the snot out of the current obsession with punk-pop like Good Charlotte, Simple Plan, etc.

Yea I haven't heard of any of their new stuff, but I'll get ahold of it soon. I agree Axl is much worse than Slash, without a doubt. I also do agree with you about suicide, its a cop out in my opinion. I'm still on the fence on whether or not it was suicide, considering he had so much heroin in him that he wouldn't have been able to pick up the shot gun. But I'm not going to point fingers about that. I don't like Axl's voice but it does manage to fit and I couldn't ever imagine someone else singing a song like Welcome to the Jungle. I think the same goes for Cobain...

Yeah, that is true. What's the rumor? Supposedly his crazy wife killed him? I wouldn't be a bit surprised with that, but I think Cobain was on the fast track to doing it himself anyway (through drug use or depression). Axl's voice can definitely be annoying, but in parts of many of the Gunners' songs, it's just a great soaring voice (underrated "Rocket Queen" is a perfect example...he goes from a full bore hard rock vocal at the beginning to a very nice sounding ballad finish). Cobain's range isn't as good as Axl's, but he still has a catchy voice that can be annoying if you let it be (just like Axl's).
Edit: GN'R's new stuff sounds like garbage the first time you hear it (especially "I.R.S." which has a weird beginning with Axl sounding like he's getting a from a woman). However, I.R.S does have pretty catchy guitar work on it. "Better" is a really good song (I'd say it rivals anything on UYI 1 or 2), although the sound is different (not the "classic" rock style...a more industrial sound, but still really cool). "Catcher In The Rye" features Brian May of Queen on guitars. It's a cool song too. "There Was A Time" is very similar to UYI style epics like "Estranged." The 4 leaks are all very good compared to Emo, etc. that is in mainstream rock at the moment. They do take a few listens to grow on you though.

Yea, that is the rumor. Prior to the fatal suicide he had attempted several times over dosing on perscription drugs while in Rome. He actually escaped from rehab in LA, flew back to Seattle, and stayed their for a couple days before finishing the deed. People tried to help him but it just seemed like he had enough, c'est la vie I guess.
Never really got into Nivarna tbh... There are plenty of other bands I would put ahead of Nivarna as far as influence is concerned. Yes they did introduce a new direction for some, it was supposed to be a back to basics idea, though I'm not really convinced of that at all.
Guns n Roses got very silly when Axl Rose decided he was the band... er no..!!!!! The band is the band, its the sum of its parts, fine axl has a great rock voice, but when he starts playing about with his image, starts dumbing down the set list & lets his ego go on overtime, its a big turn off.
Mick Jagger is liable to let his ego get the bettor of himself from time to time, but at least he allows Keef to bring himself back down to earth..
As far as influence on music goes, I could really site loads of other bands, Aerosmith the Stones, both of which cut out of the same mould. Led Zeppelin, Cream, MSG, Black Sabbath, AC/DC, Deep Purple, Iron Maiden, Fairport Convention & Steeleye Span, Yes, Rush, The Jam, The Police, U2, Dire Straites, Metallica, The Eagles, CSN(&Y).... The list goes on. to include a plethora of other styles.
Nivarna were big in a modern underground sort of way, maybe attainging the cult following the Likes of Megadeth have, but again falling short imo.
If it has to be between Nivarna & Guns'n'Roses, even with the over developed ego of axl, I would still say guns'n'roses.
Though of course there is the reformed Guns'n'roses, but what I find very strange & odd is how axl can call it by that name even though there isn't a single member of the old band there & especially no Slash. It would be like Bruce Dickinson going off on his own & calling the resulting band Iron Maiden. Ok its going to have the vocal front, but that would be it. And I know full well he wouldn't be that silly.

Tough call, MTV's Jim Morrison wannabe vs. the biggest primadonna in rock... And don't even get me started on the "new" G 'n R. They should forfeit the name to Velvet Revolver and just go with "Axl and 5 other guys"
