Hey, I was wondering what does it matter if someone has yoru IP adress? What can they do if they have access to it? I don't understand is there anything someone can do if they have your IP? I'm just asking because I'm guessing a mod of a forum would have access to it, and if he decided to go wild (not on this forum) what could he do?
If it's a static (dedicated) IP you could find out which part of the world the server is located at, possibly get a name and town, state but that's about it. If it's a dynamic IP you won't be able to tell a thing about the user because a different user will have it at any given time. AOL, PeoplePC, Netzero, etc. all use dynamic IP's and of course if someone is using a proxy or an anonymizer then the IP tells you nothing but where the server is located.
Well I was reading if you do not have a members account on wikipedia then people can track your IP or have access to it ans was wondering if it is worth becoming a member?
Oh and another thing my brother has started an account on her called theking with some numbers anyway he's joined to spam how can I stop this I would hate to be banned aswell, surely the fact that ive been here for ages would say Im not here for trouble.
Your "brother" is going to get you in trouble here since we can't distinguish between "him" and you online. I suggest you take care of that situation offline so we don't have to address it here.

Having your IP address "on record" is more of a scare tactic than anything else. Like stated above if you're using your run-of-the-mill ISPs then you have nothing to worry about in terms of hackers. And the average person doesn't know what to do with someone's IP anyway. Lastly if "they" really wanted to do something (and I'm speaking from personal experience) they would have to file a complaint with your ISP and then your ISP would contact you in regards to the matter. Yes, it has happened to me and I got a slap on the wrist, all because they traced my IP back to me. Would this happen with Wikipedia? Probably not, they would just ban your account and prevent logins from that IP subnet.
Just for fun...
