Does Madonna deserve to get into the R&R Hall of Fame on her first try? I was surprised that she is going to be inducted and Donna Summer was turned down. Why a pop star over the queen of disco? Anyone else surprised besides me?
On another note, I'm glad to see Mellencamp and the Dave Clark Five are going to be inducted.
Sam - you do know they inducted Grandmaster Flash last year, don't you. I think the early rappers should be honored, just not there - Sugar Hill Gang & Schoolly D should be recognized too - first rap song and first "gansta" rapper.
Either they change it to the "Music Hall of Fame" or add divisions for Pop, R&B, Rap, Hip Hop, Disco etc.

Now, I'm truly impressed! What do you know about Schooly D? That's some crazy music there! I used to enjoy that music - back in my formative years...
I think Madonna belongs not only because her body of work is impressive, but because she made herself one of the most successful women in music; her marketing, and really reinventing herself and her style over and over. I didn't consider her early music really quality, but it was very poppy. Then she became a better singer/songwriter/musician altogether. The Erotica era to the current dancy stuff (I don't care much for her current music, but respect it's appeal and her ability to cross musical lines) makes her a viable candidate for the Hall of Fame.
I don't think it's fair to compare the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to the Baseball Hall of Fame - they're really two different types of things. Baseball is so very specific; players, managers, writers, owners and officials. There is so little definition of rock and roll that the hall would be miniscule if it were only limited to "rock" musicians - or let me not say small, but you would end up allowing marginal acts eventually - where would you put people like Madonna and Donna Summer, whose music is more pop and disco respectively than rock...
I do agree with you about Madonna being an astute businesswomen. I only questioned her induction because of the music itself.
She's definitely not "rock", but there is no "pop" hall of fame. And judging by the inductees in the hall normally, it's more about the rock music era (1950's and beyond) than actual rock and roll musicians. That's what I think, at least... and I agree that if Madonna gets in, you gotta have Donna Summer.
