Moving to Virginia

My wife and I are moving to Virginia. She has a job we can not refuse plus they are paying for the move. We have three monthes before we leave the Ozarks. I'm looking for a reasonably priced golf course in Manassas. I want to join the golf club when I get there.

Can't help you with course prices around there, but I do know there are plenty of courses in that area. I grew up down around there (Warrenton) and there were no courses then, but you won't have any trouble finding one now. Hope you like the East Coast. BTW, you're gonna love rush hour traffic around D.C.! LOL!

Look up The Gauntlet at Curtis Park. a little too far from Manassas to join..but it's a Dye Design and challenging.

http://www.golfgauntlet.com

It's my home course right now and it's quite the challenge.

Im from centreville, va about 5 minutes from manassas. Theres tons of courses out there. A few around you are:

Fairfax National Golf course: 27 hole golf course. lots of trees, seldom water. rate:3.9/5
Bull Run Golf Course: 18 holes, heard its ok, never played there
General's Ridge: 18 holes, beautiful course, very hard. up and down and up and down. Plays on a mountain. great long course though. rate: 4.2/5
Forest greens: 18 holes, nice course overall. 4.2/5
Prince William Golf course: 18 holes, eh its ok... nice but not at the same time.3.5/5

If you live in manassas theres this great deal you can get. My family just joined for the 2nd year. its three golf courses in the prince william area. (Forest greens, prince william, and generals ridge) and you pay a one years fee just like joining a club and you get to play at all three courses. The prices seem pretty decent from what i saw. This way you dont get bored of just one course all the time. The anem is called Prince william County Park Authority golf: the number is 703-221-0123. I hope this helps you out some.

There is also something called VSGA. (Virginia State Golf Association). For about 60$ you get a card that lots of different courses in virginia. This card gives you free green fees, but you have to pay for cart. www.VSGA.org. This is good if you like to travel and play at different courses. The best thing is that they have The Homestead course. ranked #4 in the US for public course. With this card you can play for 26$ instead of $110.

If you have any other questions or need help just email me.

Thanks for the info. How do you do it? I am online pricing homes in that area. I live in a 2750 sq ft home. I have a half acre lot. I bought it for 95,000. I am trying to find something close to what we have now but it is very expensive out there.

Keep your house and commute from Springfield. It will be cheaper and with the traffic in D.C. the way it is you should get to work at about the same time.

Just kidding - I think. Good luck with the move. Enjoy your new digs; you are moving to a great part of the country!

it is very expensive in the northern va area. Housing prices have jumped remarkably in the last few years. A two bedroom condo can range anywhere from 350-500,000$ depends on location. Traffic is like none other, can go 10 miles without waiting 45 minutes in traffic. Wish u the best of luck in finding a great home... must say though, golf is great in northern va (NOVA)

I am also from centreville, right down the road from manassas. If you get out here soon enough you can go and see the Presidents Cup on Lake Manassas.

The best course I have played in Virginia is Bull Run...it's a fun course.

Generals Ridge was listed above, that course is hard as **** . I think it was rated one of the hardest courses in Virginia.

Also, if you make a little trip to centreville you can play at Twin Lakes or Westfields. Westfields was designed by Fred Couples and is probably one of the best maintained courses around where you will be. Twin Lakes is just a public course, but it has two separate courses which is good.

I'm a fan of General's Ridge, but the Washington Post called it "Sadistic". Its not overly long, but if you miss the fairway its about a lost ball. And the greens all have Windmills and Clowns Mouths.

I played a nice course in Lorton, VA called Pohick Bay. Its not bad.

You're not going to find a house like that though, if you're staying in VA. Realize that the list prices you're looking at online are just the starting point, most places go for $50K-$150K over the list price. If you want a house, you're going to have a long commute in the morning (evenings too).

Re: Moving to Virginia

there's a course in lorton (which is about 25 min away) its called laurel hills and its really nice... It's public but its well kept and there is always a cartpath only rule, so the conditions are always nice. If you don't mind a spending a little allowance money, laurel hills priovides variety and some challenging play.

cchoi31 mentioned fairfax national. thats a pretty good course too... it's got some pretty narrow fairways, but its really flat. once you get used to the fairways, it gets kinda boring
