Course: Heron's Ridge (Virginia Beach, VA)
Date/Time Played: 6/30/07 11:04
Club House and Staff:
Heron's Ridge is a course I play a lot because it's close to my house, a friend was the Pro there and is now the golf director for this course and the VB National. It's semi-private, but treats everyone like they are a member. I bought a package a few months back that had some free mid week rounds, two for ones on the weekend, free range balls all for 40.00. So, we use 2 sets of the 4 two for ones, making the price 34.00 a person, nice. Again, picked up in the parking lot by their roving cart girls, taken to the club house, great snack bar, not expensive at all. Said hi to Glen Pierce, the golf director and friend, and off to the range. Agian, starters are hustling getting folks set, everyone is hanging out under an open air roofed warm up room. Hit some balls, and the starter comes and lets us know we got about 5 minutes to go. Great staff thought out, great cart girl service.
The Course:
Course is a little dry, heck, it seems to never rain here. It got a small sprinkle the night before, but was still dry. Even with the lack of rain, greens were great, and fairways still very good. The front side plays like a links course, while the backside is wooded. It's a great lay out, with houses only some what close on 3-4 holes. The lay out makes you use all the clubs in the bag, and the par 4s make you think before just swinging your driver, with laying up on a couple a must, unless you really hit long. I tend to hit everything with a a decent sized fade, even when I don't want to, but on the backside there is a great par 4 dog left right. I spanked my drive and had to yell "FOUR!!" as I rolled my ball up on the green, 330 yards away. By far my best golf shot ever!
Pictures:
The par 4 1st
The 2nd, over a horse shoe water hazard, and a narrow fairway. The hole I love to hate! I actually hit a good drive!
Dog leg right par 4 3rd, another good shot for me! Don't worry, it ends soon!
Edgar teeing off on the 4th
John "Chef" Hadzima teeing off also:
Big Bob Garrison, who is about a 4 handicap, and has no business playing with us hacks!
Various golf pictures as I forgot which hole is which:
Bob, nice swing:
Number 10!
Bob again, he shot 76
This is 18, a favorite of mine:
Finial Thoughts:
Heron's Ridge is a must play in Virginia Beach. The staff, the course, the lay out and the elevation changes in a flat Virginia Beach make this course a challenge to all. The members are some of the nicest folks I have ever met, even to us weekend duffers!
Side Note: This was the first course I tried out the new Stack and Tilt swing, or at least what I think it is. It was easy, natural, and I actually have to rethink my irons now, as I am hitting them a good 20-30 yards longer than before. I just have to learn distance control now, but the swing is great.
