Course Review: Signature at West Neck

Course: Signature at West Neck (Virginia Beach, VA)

Date/Time Played: 7/02/07 3:30pm

Club House and Staff:

This time in, playing off our rain checks from last week, I was very late, but before, the club house staff was great. They even had a beer with us when they closed it down because of weather. The starter was a great guy, he was about 60, and saw my name, and asked me if my father went to school around here. he did of course, and they turned out to be High School friends who haven't seen each other in ages. At West Neck, they take care of you, so he handed us a couple free waters and a golf towel, and off we went.

The Course:

Mere words will fall short with this course, it is by far and away the best course in Hampton Roads. This is a semi private club, with great drainage (which we don't need to know about, hasn't rained in weeks) great watering, awesome greens, the best cut fairways, light rough and rough. It was perfect, through out the course, all even and uniform. The greens were all perfect, and the up and down elevation changes on the greens made them the toughest I have ever played. The, designed by the Great Arnold Palmer, has his touches all over it. Every hole off the tee, there is a tree or other very plain land mark, designed by Arnie, to aim at. once you look for them, they are obivious, but they do not intrude on the natural look of the course. Lots of water, bunkers, fair way bunkers, guarded greens, carries over water, then over again, lots of places for lay ups and go for its, for the big hitters. Inviting long fairways where you have to have nerves of steel to use drivers as they narrow and put hazzards right in the 260 range of your drivers. Be long or be safe, that's a theme through out the course. ENOUGH, bring on the pictures!

Pictures:

First Tee!

Hole 2:

Confused now of what hole I am on picture wise, so the pictures do the talking:

Here comes the water!! I didn't splash here, but did over shoot the green trying not splash!

Brian on the Par 3:

The green:

Dog Leg right, notice Arnie put the two trees out there, he wants you to shoot between them, like a field goal!

The Green on the "Field Goal" hole:

View from the cart, one of my "blow up" holes that ruin my rounds. Thank you bunker!

Tough hole here, since I tend to slice all my drives:

One of my best golf shots ever here, I hit to a bunker and find it on the side of the hill behind the pot bunker. I have stand in the bunker, ball 4 fee above my feet and baseball swing a 7 iron from 150 yards out. I roll it 2 feet from the green, amazing!

Hey, look, bunkers!

Ross teeing off:

Chef showing that winning form:

Holy smokes, who's that handsome fella with the great golf swing? Well, it looks like ME!:

To left is 100 yards of pot bunkers, meaning, don't go left, go right. I hit 1 in 15 driver straight as an arrow, and I set up left since I slice. I go straight here, bad news.

Getting late in the day. It was 76, a nice breeze, sunny, and the best golf weather ever!

The Green:

Chef, going for it, another 300 yard blast!

Welcome the Bunker baby, your gonna die! (Guns & Roses plays in the back ground)

The 18th, water all along the right, and club house on the right beyond the water.

The green, and an end the best day of golf ever condition wise and course wise:

Finial Thoughts:

If a pictures says a 1000 words, here are 36,000 words, and they all are the same: AWESOME. This course is by far the best Hampton Roads has to offer. If you are in Virginia Beach, or the surrounding areas, make a tee time here and play. You will not be disappointed!
