Hilton Head course recommendations

I'm heading to Hilton Head in mid-August. Are there any recommended courses there under $100 (preferably under $50)?

Thanks in advance,
Ed

You can pretty much play any public course there for under $100 except Harbour Town. The more expensive courses (and presumably better) include the Palmetto Dunes courses (R. T. Jones, Fazio, Arthur Hills), Oyster Reef, Indigo Run (Nicklaus), and the Ocean Course. I can't remember all of them. Make sure you pick up that month's "Golfer's Guide" when you get there. It's a little booklet that has pictures, phone numbers, slope ratings, even prices on a lot of them.

If you want to play for cheaper you can definitely go just off the island, there are a whole bunch of courses up to ten miles from the bridge. A few years ago I played Old Carolina, which is on the mainland, and I think it's a great course. Tough finishing holes on both nines. http://www.oldcarolinagolf.com/ I also played Crescente Pointe this year, which is just off the island and is a Palmer course.

I also played Sea Marsh, which tees off from the same clubhouse as the Ocean course in the Sea Pines section of the Island. It's kept in great shape and is a fun, not overly-challenging course, although you couldn't tell it by my score.

Anywhere you go is going to be in great shape compared to your local muni.

My best piece of advice is to get a local phone book when you get there and look up "Last Minute Tee Times" in the white pages. They are open something like 7:30-10:30 pm for next morning tee times and 8-11 a.m. for that afternoon. You can get really good deals if you're flexible (for example, they offered me Country Club of Hilton Head, normally $95, for $52 at 8:30 am). So that's definitely an option you'll want to explore.

Also, if you like mini golf, you absolutely don't want to miss going to Adventure Cove and playing the Island Course. Each hole is a replica of a famous real golf hole on the island, complete with water and carpet bunkers. The holes are scaled 1 mini-golf inch :: 1 real yard and par for each hole is the true par minus one for a par-54 layout. It's worth it just for the finishing hole, which you can probably guess

Thanks very much for the suggestions. This is my first time visiting there, so I'm completely ignorant of the courses offered. My boys will love the putt-putt course, too. They have fun at our local par-3 playing best ball, which they're getting better and better at.

Thanks again,
Ed

Brian,

I can't even think about that course without laughing, not because it's a bad course, but because my brothers set the world record there for balls lost in a single round. It wasn't so funny at the time because they were using my clubs and those were my balls they lost. But hearing my dad talking about it as the worst golf experience of his life just cracks me up every time.

To help Ed out, that course probably has the lowest price you'll find in the area. I wouldn't mind playing it some time.

Just PM me and I can get you out at a private course "off the beaten path" for probably less than you'll pay at most resort courses and you'll have the whole course to yourself.

Now that would be too cool. But I don't want to inconvenience anyone, nor am I a good golfer. I just wanted to enjoy one of the courses down there during my family vacation. In effect, it would be a vacation within a vacation, if you know what I mean.

I understand and it would not be an inconvenience. It's just one of those who you know type things...lol. Regardless, I'll let you know the conditions before you get down here. While some of the courses mentioned may be pretty good, the conditions of some of them is not the best right now due to their heavy overseeding and cool spring. Also, there was a dog track mentioned that I would avoid like the plague and it also has a sister course that is even worse.

Long Cove is definitely the place to play...even ahead of Harbor Town which is not in good shape this time of year anyway. Very tough to get on LC...I've been here 5 years and although I haven't tried real hard, I've only played it once. Some of the others like Belfair and Berkley Hall I have played countless times. The only course in the area I haven't played is Dolphin Head and those familiar with the area can understand why I haven't bothered.

My bosses' boyfriend just got a job as an assistant out at Long Cove, so I'm sucking up to him, praying for a round...I'm playing Golden Bear tomorrow morning, J.C.
